Celebrating our 25th year of art and community.
Making and sharing. Learning and teaching.

Happy New Year!
Welcome to the 25th anniversary year of PaperWorks, a Sonoran Collective. We are beginning this new year in Celebration of our founding in January, 2001. When a small group of dedicated people had a vision of combining the virtues of creative work, shared knowledge, and community experience.
This dedication continues today with the work of our board, the teachers who lead workshops, meet ups and gatherings - and everyone who shows up when called upon to serve. We gather in community and learn new ways of making something beautiful, together. I am so grateful to everyone who helps further our vision.
I love the exchange of knowledge most of all. We constantly learn new ways of doing and making. Taking inspiration from what is shared and transforming what we learn into something unexpected. Then passing on our knowledge with others! It is my hope that we continue this delightful journey together for years to come.
January begins with art openings and celebration. Over 50 members have artwork in the Beneath the Surface show at the Steinfeld Gallery. There are many opportunities to see and be a part of the show. I invite you to join us as we acknowledge this good work and the community that made it.
Our meeting this month is on January 8, a bit delayed because of the holiday. Our speaker, Holley Bakich, a new PaperWorks member, is an incredible artist working in a stunning array of materials. New members are invited to a Meet and Greet after the meeting as well.
I hope you are beginning the year in a grateful, generous space. I look forward to all we will learn and share in the year to come.
Wishing you a year of renewal, discovery and friendship,
Warm Regards,

SPEAKER: Holley Bakich
World Mythologies and Storytelling as Artistic Inspiration
Holley Bakich is a multi-faceted artist who wants to tell you a story—either an ancient myth, a religious epiphany, or a tale of a remarkable person—in images and symbols. Craftsmanship, through the use of traditional processes, is her goal. Using beads, sequins, metal leaf as well as leather and fabric, Holley draws upon mythologies and stories from all over the world. The materials, all hand-sewn on leather, fabric or wood take time and patience giving each artwork a part of herself through the meditative creative process. The materials she selects have a tactile quality that elevates the image above two dimensions, shaping and forming the material to last for hundreds of years.
