NOVEMBER 2026

Celebrating art and community.

Making and sharing. Learning and teaching.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

When the Work gets Done

In the life of a painting,

there is a curve, of creation. Highs

and Lows. Moments, where the work

Sings. And long days when you want

To give up, and reconsider…

All of your life choices.

Ever.

This, is the bottom of the curve.

Don’t quit here. The time

when nothing is going the way

You want. When you doubt

Everything. Paint through This.

Keep going. Allow for the struggle.

Know this Will happen. It has

to happen…If art were easy, everyone

Would Do it 😊

Painting is about solving problems.

Of your own making. You have

a good idea but the painting

has another. You start in the middle

and then try, every Which Way,

to get out of the middle. You are working

in the abstract… but somehow…

paint a puppy.

That you just can’t unsee.

You fall in love with one small

and precious part. Knowing, you must

paint over that, if the painting is ever

going to be good.

And then there are the days

when everything Works. And you love

what you are making and you love your life and you know you are a great artist.

Those days where every color mix

Is magic. The puppy

disappears. The composition expands

and you dance through the work.

Hours melting into bliss.

This is the top of the painting curve.

Stop here! Stop now! Let it rest.

Come back to it, later, and reconsider.

What next. What more. Knowing…

The painting will be done, just before

It is finished.

-Vera Gates

Dedicated to my painting teacher, Larry Robinson.

RINA YOON - SPEAKER

The Paper Path: From Hanji to Papercasting

WEB: www.rinayoon.com

IG: @rinayoonart

FB: Facebook.com/rinayoonart

My presentation traces my journey through paper, shaped by travels to Korea where I studied traditional hanji-making and craft practices. Through immersion in process, repetition, and touch, I came to understand how material itself can guide artistic direction. This experience not only informed my evolving practice—including later explorations in paper casting—but also deepened my connection to my Korean heritage. My talk reflects on how listening to material can open new pathways for making, meaning, and identity.

A retired Professor of Fine Art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Yoon earned her BFA from Southern Methodist University and MFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis. A PaperWorks member, she lives and works in Tucson, Arizona.

WORKSHOP

TERENCE LEACH

The Four Brush Paper Relationship

Fri, NOV 13, 10AM - 4PM

Members Only

FEE $50 | 10 participants, (Max 15)

Class level: All are welcome

Learn the four brush/paper relationships and the timing associated with them. These relationships govern how water and pigment move between the brush and paper in watercolor. They are affected by time. How long it takes for the water to dry or how thick the paint is on the brush controls the final color.

Review values and make a quick value chart. Practice this timing after reviewing values. Participants will paint-along using at least 3 of the brush/paper relationships.

Books are as expansive as the stories they can contain. You will learn how to make 3 unique modular book forms: a hexaflexagon, an orihon book, and a chinese thread box. These book forms offer unique ways to express ideas with unexpected transitions and hidden compartments! These forms encourage abstract associations, nonlinear storytelling, and expansive notions on how the content of a book can be emphasized also with its sculptural form.

THEME: Unbound invites artists to wander without limits. To be unbound is to be unfettered: free of the constraints of convention, expectation and the familiar. It is the moment an idea slips its tether and moves into territory yet unexplored.

The exhibition follows the imagination wherever it goes. It may arrive as a new medium,

an unexpected method, or a question finally asked. It may be the setting aside of a habit

of style or subject that has quietly held your work in place. Whether your work breaks a boundary or dissolves one, freedom lies in seeking new expressions once ideas are unbound.
