Winding my way through the remains
of a lazy summer. My thoughts turn
toward Tucson, and home. I’m Ready
to begin new work, to breathe
New love into old Friendships.
It’s been good. To pause and get my bearings.
To turn off the phone, read old books.
To walk and notice. The changing sky. The birds.
The scent of the woods when it’s hot.
I wander in a fever dream of words
and images. Nothing catching fire.
Then one day - magic! The alchemy
of an artist. Traceries of an idea

of my vision. Wanting
to become.
Autumn beckons. Close. Luminous.
As Summer fades into long shadows.
Corn tassels wave. The breeze sweet with sugar.
Bags packed, I head for home.
I hope your summer has been Peaceful
and good. Have you had time to look
closely? At what is worth carrying forward?And what you can now let go? Are you ready
to come back to all the things you love?

Full disclosure: Ema is not a human.
Emas are beautifully designed, colorful Japanese votive plaques found at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Last year Anne traveled to Japan with the goal of collecting as many emas as possible. She is excited to share this little-known aspect of Japanese culture while also showing examples of Japanese calligraphy she collected on her trip.
Intrigued by Japanese culture since childhood, she has made two trips to Japan in the last decade and avidly researched Japanese design culture. After a 40+ year career as a graphic designer and communications director, she now spends her time taking photographs and teaching design as an adjunct instructor at Arizona colleges.

Meet our scholarship winner for this year from the School of Art at the U of A, Nova Nazari.
"I work as an interdisciplinary artist in painting, textile, installation, and animation, where making becomes a way of holding what cannot be spoken. My practice grows from suppressed emotions, fragmented thoughts, and the persistent need to translate inner turbulence. Alongside my studio work, I have over ten years of experience teaching art to children and teenagers, creating spaces for storytelling and creative exploration. I am currently an MFA candidate in Illustration, Design and Animation."

COVERS and PAGES

Covers and Pages is a collaborative bookmaking meetup where we create and explore together. Each member participates by leading one meetup session per year on a topic of their choice. When each member contributes just once, everyone receives a whole year’s worth of bookmaking fun and knowledge!
Members can facilitate a discussion, demo a technique, or teach the group a simple book form, suitable for all skill levels. Committed attendance enables us to work on projects from month to month. Join us to share your passion and create some inspiration!

Participants will create art that communicates a personal narrative beginning with an exploration of their own "language" of symbols, lines, shapes, and colors. They will craft their own handmade brushes and stamps, experimenting with expressive mark-making, creating a series of collage papers.
These papers, along with personal photographs, found objects and ephemera, will then be used to construct a unique composition that becomes a visual story, capturing memories, emotions, and identity.

Did your favorite childhood book take you on an adventure or introduce you to new and amazing animals? Did the book invite you into the lives of other kids and their families? Maybe fantasy and fairy tales spring to mind. Whatever memories come rushing back, take them and create a work of art. You may include the author/title of the book if you wish. There are no size restrictions but keep in mind that there are limits on the tables we have to display the entries. Art work can be any medium, 2D or 3D.
Please do not put your name on your piece
as the membership will be voting on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards.

The Fall field trip for Paperworks members will be a tour at the Tucson Museum of Art. From it’s roots in 1924, the museum continues its mission “to connect art to life through meaningful and engaging experiences that inspire discovery, spark creativity, and promote cultural understanding.”
Our tour will be led by PW member and museum docent Miriam Otte, and will last
1-1.5 hours. For those interested in enjoying lunch together after the tour, we will adjourn to Cafe a La C’Art, the restaurant just a few steps from the museum.
