We’ve had a delightful Valentine’s Day season filled with festive events—and we’re excited to welcome a new face to Advanced Training! So, snuggle in, grab a piece of chocolate, and enjoy reading about our February adventures!

A Valentines Day to Remember!

Three of our volunteers sit on a bench made of ice. They are holding three five month old puppies.

Each month, our community puppies embark on a grand adventure to experience new sights and sounds, helping them become more confident and comfortable in the real world. So, when we heard there would be a Valentine’s Day celebration in Loveland, we knew it was the perfect opportunity for our three community pups of our F class!

Driving into Loveland, even the light poles were decorated with Valentine hearts, making it feel as though the entire town was buzzing with love. At this outing, we welcomed Goose, Granby, and Gilligan, our five-month-old puppies. Immediately, they were greeted by vibrant decorations, lively crowds, and the unique excitement that only a festival can bring. With our volunteers there to guide them, they bravely stepped into the celebration.

One of the major attractions at this event is the giant ice sculptures. Each of our pups took in the towering works of art. This was an excellent opportunity to practice staying calm around unusual shapes in new environments. As they admired the sculptures, the artists continued carving, introducing new and unexpected sounds to their experience. We even captured a group photo to commemorate the moment!

Next, the group entered the museum, along with a wave of energetic children. Kids can present a unique challenge for puppies with their erratic movements and excited squeals. Goose, Granby, and Gilligan’s gentle nature shone bright as they calmly observed the children working on their art projects. Even a few drive-by pets didn’t faze these three!

This wonderful outing was the perfect adventure for our service dogs in training. They experienced so many new and exciting things throughout the day. A special thanks to Lisa, John, Lori, and Barb for helping guide these puppies through all the excitement and chaos!

Fiona's Next Steps!

Our volunteer Jim stands next to a yellow lab named Fiona smiling.

As our five-month-old puppies begin their journey, one of our community puppies is taking the next big step. We’re excited to welcome Fiona to advanced training!

This delightful ball of fur has been lovingly raised by Trina and Jim over the past year, who have poured their time, dedication, and hearts into this future service dog. This month, we officially welcomed Fiona into advanced training, and her first day was one to remember.

The day began with her first drop-off from Jim, one of her puppy raisers. Immediately, Fiona bounded into the yard with enthusiasm that could only be described as a smile from ear to ear. Her confidence brought a smile to Leah, Fiona’s new trainer. After spending some time talking with Jim and learning more about Fiona’s journey so far, we captured a commemorative photo to celebrate the moment.

Fiona’s first day continued with some bonding time with Leah. They started in the backyard, exploring new toys, enjoying a few treats, and testing out her cues. From sit and down to a beautiful recall, Fiona’s confidence shone through—clear evidence of the strong foundation built by her dedicated puppy raisers.

Next, it was time for a tour of the facility. In the kennel room, Fiona carefully sniffed every inch, making sure her new space was just right. There, she met her new roommate, Epic, a chocolate Lab. Fiona was immediately excited to make a new friend!

After the tour came training time. Armed with treats and a clicker, Leah worked with Fiona to show her how offering behaviors earns rewards. This important skill will help Fiona quickly master the new cues she’ll learn in advanced training. Together, they spent time building focus and reinforcing that training is both engaging and fun.

The rest of Fiona’s day was spent relaxing in Leah’s office and playing with her new friend, Epic. We’re happy to share that Fiona has settled in beautifully and is already working hard toward her goal of becoming a life-changing service dog.

A Puppy Classroom Party

Two volunteers with with their two five month old puppies inside Paragon's training area.

Our community puppy raisers for the F class of puppies have been working diligently in class, and we’re excited to share what they’ve been learning!

The class began with collar-pressure games. Our puppy raisers gently apply small amounts of pressure to the collar, and the puppies learn to move with that guidance. In the photos, you’ll see the dogs carefully placing their feet on the small blue dots, guided only by a soft, steady pull. This foundational skill is essential for helping our puppies one day walk beautifully beside their person.

Next, the group headed outdoors for a walk. Each puppy and their volunteer handler stretched their legs while putting those walking skills to the test. Practicing calm pass-bys helps the puppies maintain focus and composure while working around other dogs. It’s always a joy to watch them offer such thoughtful attention to their handlers.

The final task was settling practice. Learning to relax while their person eats at a restaurant or works at a desk can be challenging for a young puppy, so our raisers received helpful tips during class. Each puppy practiced lying quietly on a blanket beside their handler, gradually building this important skill. Granby, who learned this at his last Paragon visit, was proud to model the behavior for his fellow classmates.

After an hour of hard work, the session ends with playtime in the backyard and a bit of storytelling among our volunteers. At this age, there are plenty of goofy moments, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share in them. Before we know it, these puppies will be all grown up and ready for advanced training!

Dog Diaries: Flip

A Frenchie named Griswold and a brown Cobberdog named Flip sit in a warehouse. They are both looking up at the camera inquisitively.

Hello,

Flip here! I wanted to share an exciting adventure I went on recently. My buddy Griswold and I visited a Paragon staff member’s family warehouse!

There were all sorts of new noises and construction sounds. At first, I felt a little nervous with all the unfamiliar smells and sounds, but my buddy Griswold helped show me that everything was okay.

By the end of my adventure, I was having a delightful time meeting new human friends and hanging out with my pal Griswold.

Until next time,

Flip
