As we welcome all the beautiful spring plants here at Paragon, our adorable service dogs in training have been growing and blossoming right alongside them. We invite you to join us as we share our young dogs’ new experiences as they develop into wonderful service dogs. Not only have our puppies been growing, but one of our service dog teams has truly bloomed!

Fiona's Trip to the Hardware Kingdom

A yellow lab named Fiona walks next to an orange shopping cart.

For our advanced training dogs, like Fiona, an added challenge during outings is practicing cues and maintaining proper position throughout the entire experience. This month, our trainers took Fiona to the land of hardware, Home Depot. The echoing building provided the perfect opportunity to practice skills outside of the training room.

During this trip, Fiona masterfully heeled next to the cart. Unlike normal heeling, working alongside a shopping cart requires Fiona to be aware of her feet while matching her trainer’s speed, something she did beautifully. Fiona also practiced down-stays and recalls throughout the store. Despite all the distractions, she executed each of her cues with precision. We’re so delighted by all her hard work in advanced training!

A Client Team Blossoms!

Here at Paragon, the partnerships we build between our dogs and clients don’t end with team training. The story truly begins at graduation. That’s why updates from our clients are so meaningful as we continue to support them along their journey. One team that has truly blossomed is Courtney and Caro.

After years of progressive hearing loss, Courtney’s world became smaller as she lost the sense of safety and adventure she once cherished. After reaching out to Paragon, we matched her with Caro, an enthusiastic Labrador, and they have been working incredibly hard together ever since.

One way to strengthen the bond between handler and dog is through dog sports, and Courtney and Caro have been earning spot titles together. Recently, they began competing in rally, a sport that requires strong communication and teamwork in a highly stimulating environment. Rally trials include early mornings, distracting dogs, new smells, and travel that can challenge many teams, but not Caro.

During a recent trial, the team stayed at a hotel, where Caro demonstrated his skills beautifully. First by alerting Courtney to a knock at the door, something that would have previously caused anxiety. Then, from alarms to the microwave, Caro helped turn the trip into a fun and empowering experience.

We are thrilled to share that the team performed beautifully at the trial, earning a 90/100 in the morning and a perfect score in the afternoon, bringing them one step closer to their next title!

Courtney shared in a recent email:

“THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing this wonderful pup into my life! We were absolutely meant for each other, and I could not be more grateful!!!”

Forest Almost Takes Flight

A black lab named Forest sits in front of a baggage claim.

Up in Wyoming, Forest has also been staying busy. As a younger pup, he’s been focusing on exploring new environments, and this month he visited a regional airport in Nebraska. Since many of our service dogs will take a flight at some point in their training, this is a wonderful step toward preparing for larger airports.

This small airport had all the elements of air travel! Forest explored a model airplane and calmly observed the baggage claim—showing the steady, collected demeanor he’s becoming known for. These experiences are invaluable for our young dogs, and we’re so excited to see how well Forest is progressing.

Dog Diaries: Gilligan

Hi!

I have such an exciting story to tell. My puppy raiser and I took a special trip to a nursing home to visit her family. The building was giant and full of so many people! I was very curious about everything, but my puppy raiser said I did amazing.

The whole family walked to the cafeteria for lunch, and there was a long line of residents behind me. Even with all the canes, walkers, and wheelchairs, I stayed right by my puppy raiser the whole time. She said I was really brave!

Ta-ta for now!

Happy Pi Day!

We didn’t want our dogs to miss out on Pi Day, so we celebrated and put together a fun video on our social media.

Flyer describes workshop details. Dates are May 29 to 31 2026. Location is Boulder County Fairgrounds in Colorado. Registration fee before April 30 is $300. After is $350. There are three learning tracks puppy raising, service dog trainer foundations, and advanced service dog training.

Thanks for reading all of our proud moments! We’re delighted to see not only our puppies, but also our clients, doing so wonderfully this month.

In April, a new class will enter advanced training, and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s going to be a busy month, and we’re so excited to share it with you—so stay tuned!
