Head of School Message
Dear Mercy Families,

We are all both saddened and shocked by the violence that has taken place in El Paso and Dayton, as well as in our own backyard in Gilroy. I want to share with you the following statement: 

"We, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, believe that we must all be actively working towards a culture that promotes peace and nonviolence rather than one that glorifies violence and hate. And so we join our voices with those who say enough to gun violence, enough to acts of hate, enough to demonizing the other!"

Here at Mercy High School, one of our Critical Concerns which we incorporate into our curriculum and our community is a dedication to nonviolence. Such a dedication becomes even more important as kindness, gentleness and mercy seem to grow less common in our culture.

Be assured that the safety of our students is a top priority; our girls are precious! In addition to having emergency procedures in place developed for several different situations, we are also taking steps to make the campus more secure, including limiting access to the campus during the school day from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Any extracurricular activities in the evening will take place under direct supervision of an adult.

It is unfortunate that we must deal with these realities at the same time that we are excited to begin the new school year next week. We hope that your preparations, including purchasing textbooks and uniforms, are going smoothly. Please let us know if you need assistance.

Let’s begin the year by looking outward, praying both for those who mourn in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton, as well as for the healing of the divisions in our country. At the same time, we ask the blessings of the God of Mercy on our community of mercy as we begin our new adventure together.

Academics
URGENT: REQUIRED HEALTH FORMS DUE AUG. 9

There are several medical forms required to be completed and submitted PRIOR to the start of classes. These forms are required by the state of California and must be properly submitted or students may not attend classes. The deadline for all forms is this Friday, August 9. See detailed instructions below.

All parents are required to complete health forms in the Magnus Health Portal by Friday, August 9. If these documents are not submitted by the deadline, your child will be sent home and cannot return to Mercy to attend her classes until the documents have been properly submitted.

Parents of RETURNING STUDENTS
  1. Login to your Parent Portal
  2. From the Resources tab, click on the Magnus Health Portal block
  3. Answer the Conditional Questions and complete all requirements

Parents of NEW STUDENTS are required to have a current doctor's physical and immunization record on file BEFORE she may attend classes. This is a California legal requirement for all students.

Follow these steps to make sure your child's requirements are complete:
  1. Sign into your Parent Portal
  2. From the Resources tab, click on the Magnus Health Portal block
  3. You must answer the Conditional Questions in order to view all of your child's requirements.
Please complete these requirements by Friday, August 9.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: TEXTBOOKS

ALL students need to purchase their textbooks for the coming semester. Most textbooks are no longer available for checkout in the Mercy Library. However, books noted as available for checkout on our Virtual Bookstore (MBS website) will be available for checkout in the Mercy Library. All other books on the Virtual Bookstore, which are noted as required, must be purchased, rented, or otherwise acquired by each student. Please complete your order today for all books required for the fall semester to have them in hand for the first day of classes. See detailed instructions below.

Textbook Ordering Information

The system will generate a book list based on the student's class schedule, but please READ the notes attached to each book carefully to determine if you should purchase the item. There is never a requirement to have more than one copy of a book, even if used by more than one course.  

Students will need their Student ID number when first logging into the textbook ordering system. If you do not know your Student ID, please see the "How To" Guides for Portal on either the Student or Parent Resource Boards, for step-by-step instructions of how to find it within the Portal.

Note: If you are acquiring your books through anyone other than MBS Direct (Mercy's official textbook provider) be certain to check the ISBNs of each book. Books used for courses must have the same ISBNs so that all students in the class have the identical, specified version. 

Placing Your Textbook Order
  1. Go to Mercy's Virtual Bookstore (bookstore.mbsdirect.net/mhs.htm).
  2. Click Let's Get Started.
  3. Enter your Student ID.
  4. Select the book options for each of your courses.
  5. Be certain to read all notes for each book option!
  6. Complete the checkout process.

View 2019-20 Schedules

Student schedules are now available in the Parent or Student Portal ( new students must access schedules through their parent's Portal). The "How To" Guides for Portal contain step-by-step instructions on how to view class schedules. 

For schedule change requests and schedule concerns, please contact your daughter's Academic Counselor: Ms. McVeigh, smcveigh@mercyhs.org, or Ms. Wickham, mwickham@mercyhs.org. Counselors will be available for meetings with students beginning on Monday, August 12.

Note for New Students: Access new student schedules through the Parent Portal only with parent login information (the Parent Portal is the same as used during the admissions process).

Coro District Community Action Fellows Program

Applications for Coro’s District 7 Youth Fellows Program are now available!

The District 7 Community Action Youth Fellows program trains D7 youth to initiate positive change in their communities through Coro leadership training. Youth will grow their leadership skills, gain an understanding of community issues, and get paid $500 for program completion!

The program meets weekly from September - December. Their first session will be a full-day commitment on Saturday, September 14.

Applications are due by Sunday, September 1.

Mercy Family Day for Frosh and Transfer Students - Aug. 11

Greetings to the Skipper Class of 2023 and new transfer students!

Mercy Family Day is this Sunday, August 11. The day begins at 9 a.m. with liturgy in the Pavilion. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

All Class of 2023 and transfer students and their families are expected to attend as new members of the Mercy Community.

School Uniforms Update & Picture Day

The administration team is aware that there are concerns around outstanding uniform orders. 

We have shared emails and concerns regarding order status, estimated delivery dates, exchanges, and missing items with our Global Schoolwear by Tommy Hilfiger Representative and are working on getting these issues resolved. 

According to our Global Schoolwear by Tommy Hilfiger representative, tracking information is sent out when an order is ready to ship. Orders that are still being processed will not receive tracking information or an estimated date of delivery until then. We will continue to pass on updates from Global Schoolwear by Tommy Hilfiger as soon as we get more information and updates. 

For picture day we will have a set of polos and cardigans for students to borrow if needed. 

If your student does not have a Mercy Plaid Skirt, we may have a loaner skirt that they can borrow. A limited quantity of loaner skirts will be available at Mercy Family Day for check out in the Student Life Center on the first floor. 

Students must be in formal dress on their orientation/picture day 
  • If your student has not received their formal uniform items by picture day, they should come to school in a white polo and a black cardigan. 
  • White polos can be purchased at any store that offers plain white uniform polos. 
  • A few polos and black cardigans will be available for students to wear for their school pictures if needed. 
  • Approved bottoms are the Mercy Plaid Skirt or charcoal gray dress slacks. If your daughter hasn't received these items, she may wear black or gray dress slacks until their orders are received.

Dress code violations will not be issued for students who are waiting for their shipment to be processed.

Orientation Schedules

FROSH Class of 2023
Date: Monday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 13
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (both days)
Location: Attendance/Check-In will be in the Theatre Lobby, then break out into rotations by homeroom

Please note that students must bring their laptops on both Monday and Tuesday. Students may dress in neat casual clothes on Monday but must wear the complete formal uniform on Tuesday as they will sit for yearbook and student ID photos.


RETURNING & TRANSFER STUDENTS Class of 2020, Class of 2021, and Class of 2022

The new cross country coach, Susan Sall, invites all girls who aren’t already involved in a fall sport to come check out what cross country is all about! Meet outside the gym door on Friday, August 9 at 8:30 a.m.

Those with no running experience, as well as seasoned runners, are welcome for this outdoor sport. It’s an inclusive team that will have a fun and strong season. Tell your student to bring friends!

School Lunch

Mercy High School is thrilled to continue our partnership with Epicurean Group in providing daily lunches for our students. While lunch is provided for the Mercy community each school day, Epicurean does offer breakfast options along with afternoon snack bar for a charge. 

Epicurean utilizes mySchoolBucks for the payment of food services outside of lunch. Please review the documents below for more information.

Reminder: Designated Drop Off Area

The first day of school is fast approaching! Everyone’s safety is important to us! Remember that when dropping off or picking up students, we ask that you use our designated student drop off and pick up area at the back gate on lower Junipero Serra.

To ensure that students enter and exit vehicles in a safe and organized way, we ask everyone to correctly follow our pick-up and drop-off procedures. Failure to do so creates chaos, frustration, and unsafe conditions.

Parent Portal

Each parent/guardian has a Parent Portal account where you can view your child’s progress throughout the year. This includes quarter and semester grades, attendance, conduct, and more.

We have created a “How To” Guide to help you navigate our most used features within the Parent Portal.

Access the "How To" Guide:
  1. Log in to the Parent Portal.
  2. Click on the Resources tab towards the top of the page.
  3. Click on the block that says “How To” Guide for the Mercy Parent Portal. This guide is updated as new and existing features develop, so check in periodically to see what’s new!

Parent Pledge

The Parent Pledge is a multi-year gift that gives our parents the opportunity to help offset the financial gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating your daughter. Rather than raising tuition, we rely on our parents to support Mercy by making a tax-deductible gift that is both generous and reasonable for them.

Our goal is 100% parent participation, demonstrating Mercy families' commitment to women's education. Please help us reach our goal and give by September 30!

Tuition Payments

As a friendly reminder, tuition payments are due on the 1st & 15th of each month (dependent on your selection at the time of registration) via SMART Tuition.  

Please note that charges are applied by SMART Tuition for any payment that is late, if a check is returned for NSF, or if a credit card or auto pay is returned for NSF. These are fees incurred by SMART Tuition and therefore not refundable.

Join the Holiday Boutique Committee!

Mercy is having its annual Holiday Boutique on Saturday, December 7! Be a part of Mercy's first big event of the year by joining the Holiday Boutique Committee with fellow Mercy parents.

We are getting started right away! Committee members will work with Mercy staff to help source vendors for the event as well as help plan the entertainment and raffle.

If you have creative flare or a passion for organizing, this is a great event for you to help with. It's also a great way to earn all your required parent hours doing something fun with other Mercy parents! Please email Bekah Paige, Director of Development, if you're interested in getting involved. We will hold our first committee meeting in August.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities: 2019-20 School Year

Parents are asked to complete 15 volunteer hours each school year. Parent volunteer signups for the 2019-20 school year are available now on our website.
