Dear Mercy Families,

Can you believe that within the next three weeks we will all be back at Mercy to begin a new school year? WELCOME to the Class of 2023 and transfer students who will be joining our Mercy Community! Our returning students will be taking on new roles as sophomores, juniors, and...SENIORS! Hopefully, your uniform will be ready, you will have your new textbooks, and most importantly, you will have put on your best selves — ready to bring all that you are to learn new things, tend to your friends, make new ones, and deepen your relationship to God.

Also, students, have you finished reading Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s book, Undaunted? She is a “Mercy girl” (which you know if you’ve read the book!), although she went to that “other” Mercy High School in Burlingame. She will be coming to Mercy on September 5 and is eager to speak with you and to hear your comments and questions. Parents, if you can, please feel free to join us in the Mercy Theatre at 1 p.m.

In this issue of Parent Connect is a great deal of information about Mercy Family Day on August 11 (for frosh and transfer students), our Orientation Program, and details about the first days of the new school year. Please read it carefully and mark your calendars.

Let us, as we come together in our Community of Mercy, hold one another dear and pray that all of us, individually and together, know the loving care of our God of Mercy. May that love sustain us throughout this new school year!

View 2019-20 Schedules

Student schedules for next year are now available in the Parent or Student Portal ( see note below for new students). The "How To" Guides for Portal contain step-by-step instructions on how to view class schedules. 

Schedule change requests or concerns should be directed to your daughter's counselor. Counselors will reply to students in August and may schedule meetings with students beginning on August 12.

Note for New Students: Student Portal access is not yet available. Access new student schedules through the Parent Portal only with parent login information (the Parent Portal is the same as used during the admissions process). Email Registrar, Ms. Zermani, if you have any issues. Please be sure to provide your first and last name and a good contact phone number in your email request.

Textbook Ordering Information

Please order all textbooks needed for Fall courses no later than August 5 to ensure that you have your materials in time for the start of the semester. If you place your book order between July 29 and August 2, you will receive FREE shipping. 

The system will generate a book list based on the student's class schedule, but please READ the notes attached to each book carefully! There is never a requirement to have more than one copy of a book, even if used by more than one course.  

Students will need their Student ID number when first logging into the textbook ordering system. If you do not know your Student ID, please see the "How To" Guides for Portal on either the Student or Parent Resource Boards, for step-by-step instructions of how to find it within the Portal.

Note: If you are acquiring your books through anyone other than MBS Direct (Mercy's official textbook provider) be certain to check the ISBNs of each book. Books used for courses must have the same ISBNs so that all students in the class have the identical, specified version. 

Placing Your Textbook Order
  1. Go to Mercy's Virtual Bookstore (bookstore.mbsdirect.net/mhs.htm).
  2. Click Let's Get Started.
  3. Enter your Student ID.
  4. Select the book options for each of your courses.
  5. Be certain to read all notes for each book option!
  6. Complete the checkout process.

2019-20 All School Book

The book chosen for the all school book for the 2019-20 school year is Undaunted: Surviving Jonestown, Summoning Courage, and Fighting Back by Jackie Speier. Books were distributed to all returning students in homeroom in May. Books were mailed to all incoming frosh and transfers in June.

Mercy Family Day for Frosh and Transfer Students - Aug. 11

Greetings to the Skipper Class of 2023 and new transfer students!

In two weeks we will be welcoming you and your family to campus for Mercy Family Day on Sunday, August 11. We will begin the day at 9 a.m. with Mass together followed by a fun and informative day! A reminder email will be sent out in early August with a detailed timeline of events. 

Important Message for Students:
Students have one assignment due this Friday, July 26. Please complete the All School T-Shirt Form and submit your response. Parents, feel free to complete the form for them if they are unable.

The entire faculty and staff of Mercy High School are eager to welcome you to our community. We hope you enjoy your last two weeks of summer and are ready to join a network of fiercely determined women that are drawing on their Mercy education to make a positive difference in the world.

Orientation Schedule

FROSH Class of 2023
Date: Monday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 13
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (both days)
Location: Attendance/Check-In will be in the Theatre Lobby, then break out into rotations by homeroom

Please note that students must bring their laptops on both Monday and Tuesday. Students may dress in neat casual clothes on Monday but must wear the complete uniform on Tuesday as they will sit for yearbook and student ID photos.

Frosh orientation is designed to introduce students to the realities of high school while making sure they learn the strategies that will ensure that they are ready to begin day one of high school on the right path to success.

Date: Monday, August 12 and Friday, August 16
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (both days)

Parent Portal

Each parent/guardian has a Parent Portal account where you can view your child’s progress throughout the year. This includes quarter and semester grades, attendance, conduct, and more.

We have created a “How To” Guide to help you navigate our most used features within the Parent Portal.

Access the "How To" Guide:
  1. Log in to the Parent Portal.
  2. Click on the Resources tab towards the top of the page.
  3. Click on the block that says “How To” Guide for the Mercy Parent Portal. This guide is updated as new and existing features develop, so check in periodically to see what’s new!

Required Forms for School Entry - Due Aug. 9

For the 2019-20 school year, we will be shifting all student medical information to a new online database. The healthcare management system we have adopted is called Magnus Health SMR (Student Medical Record). As this is a web-based system, you will have continuous access to your child’s health record as well as the ability to make updates when needed.

Please enter the information required within your Magnus account for each child attending Mercy no later than August 9. You will receive weekly reminders as long as there are outstanding items in your account.

To access your Magnus Health SMR Account:
  1. Login to the Parent Portal
  2. From your Resource page, click on the “Magnus Health Portal" button.

Important for all NEW students: Per California law, students who do not have a complete immunization record on file with the school by the August 9 deadline will not be able to attend orientation or classes until this requirement has been fulfilled. Please refer to the “Required Immunization” sheet in your child’s Magnus account. If your child is in need of immunizations and a current TB test, please plan accordingly so all documents are submitted by the deadline.

Please plan to complete all Magnus and Parent Portal forms for each enrolled child by August 9, 2019.

New Uniform Guidelines for 2019-20

There are some changes to the uniform for the upcoming 2019-20 school year. 

As of July 1, 2019, khaki pants are no longer approved Mercy Uniform. 

Black slacks will be phased out as approved uniform wear by 2021. 
  • Only juniors (Class of 2021) and seniors (Class of 2020) will be allowed to wear black slacks (NOT jeans) on any day except liturgy and assembly days.
  • All students must wear the Mercy Plaid skirt or approved Charcoal Herringbone slacks on liturgy and assembly days. 

Approved uniform for incoming Frosh is either :
  • Mercy Plaid
  • Tommy Hilfiger Charcoal Herringbone slacks

The new cross country coach, Susan Sall, invites all girls who aren’t already involved in a fall sport to come check out what cross country is all about! Meet outside the gym door on Friday, August 9 at 8:30 a.m.

Those with no running experience, as well as seasoned runners, are welcome for this outdoor sport. It’s an inclusive team that will have a fun and strong season. Tell your student to bring friends!

Designated Drop Off Area

Everyone’s safety is important to us! Remember that when dropping off or picking up students, we ask that you use our designated student drop off and pick up area at the back gate on lower Junipero Serra.

To ensure that students enter and exit vehicles in a safe and organized way, we ask everyone to correctly follow our pick-up and drop-off procedures. Failure to do so creates chaos, frustration, and unsafe conditions.

Parent Pledge

The Parent Pledge is a multi-year gift that gives our parents the opportunity to help offset the financial gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating your daughter. Rather than raising tuition, we rely on our parents to support Mercy by making a tax-deductible gift that is both generous and reasonable for them.

Tuition Payments

As a friendly reminder, tuition payments are due on the 1st & 15th of each month (dependent on your selection at the time of registration) via SMART Tuition.  

Please note that charges are applied by SMART Tuition for any payment that is late, if a check is returned for NSF, or if a credit card or auto pay is returned for NSF. These are fees incurred by SMART Tuition and therefore not refundable.

Join the Holiday Boutique Committee!

Mercy is having its annual Holiday Boutique on Saturday, December 7! Be a part of Mercy's first big event of the year by joining the Holiday Boutique Committee with fellow Mercy parents.

We are getting started right away! Committee members will work with Mercy staff to help source vendors for the event as well as help plan the entertainment and raffle.

If you have creative flare or a passion for organizing, this is a great event for you to help with. It's also a great way to earn all your required parent hours doing something fun with other Mercy parents! Please email Bekah Paige, Director of Development, if you're interested in getting involved. We will hold our first committee meeting in August.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities: 2019-20 School Year
