 Senior Speeches due April 18:
Seniors, if you are interested in giving a speech at the 2017 HUHS Graduation Ceremony, please submit a 3-4 minute speech (rough draft) to the Front Lobby Receptionist (Ms. Feutz.) The speeches will be reviewed by the Administration and you will be notified if your speech was selected to be presented at the graduation ceremony.
 Cap & Gown Distribution April 18:
Jostens will be distributing the Graduation Cap & Gown orders during the lunch periods (10:45AM - 12:15 PM). Please bring balance owed (if applicable). If you are unable to pick the order at this time, the orders will be at the front entrance receptionist area.

VBC and Concert Choir New York Trip
|
Sixty-two students traveled to New York City over spring break on the triannual HUHS Choral Trip. Members of the HUHS Concert Choir and Voces bel canto performed at The Church of the Heavenly Rest and The Church of St. Paul the Apostle. They also toured Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and took a bus tour around Manhattan. Students also went to 3 or 4 Broadway Shows and participated in various excursions planned by the 14 wonderful chaperones. It was a memorable trip, but it's good to be home.

WSMA State Honors Selections
|
The HUHS Music Department is proud to announce the following students were selected by audition for the WSMA State Honors Ensembles. These students were selected from over 3,000 students that auditioned throughout Wisconsin last February. They will go to a music camp this summer to rehearse their repertoire and perform next October at the Overture Center in Madison to packed houses during the WMEA (Wisconsin Music Educators Association) Conference. Semifinalists in National Writing Competition
|
A big congratulations needs to go out freshmen Annika Csizmadia, Sarah Jocham, and Alexis Puffer! These three cohort students have been named semifinalists for the national Letters About Literature writing competition. They were brought up in front of the cohort students to find out about this honor, and their reactions are priceless.
Letters About Literature is a Library of Congress National Reading-Writing Promotion Program for students in grades 4-12. Each student read a novel and wrote a letter to its author about how the book affected them personally.

Senior Seminar Drama - Great World Texts at UW-Madison
|
On Monday students from Senior Seminar: Drama classes attended the Great World Texts program at UW-Madison where the presented their "The Tempest" projects, met other students from around the state, and were given the opportunity to listen to keynote speaker, Margaret Atwood.

Students Participate in Performance
|
On Monday, April 3rd, students in the English department were invited to watch and participate in Ron Scott Fry's To Be! Shakespeare Here and Now performance. Mr. Fry helped introduce students to the history and culture of Elizabethan England while touching on many of Shakespeare's plays, including Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, and The Tempest. During this interactive performance, he persuaded several students to come up on stage as he engaged and humored the audience.

FBLA State Leadership Conference
|
On April 3 and 4, 17 FBLA members successfully represented HUHS at the State Leadership Conference in Appleton, WI. Students who attended the State Conference had the opportunity to network with FBLA members from across the state, participate in workshops and tour businesses including the Timer Rattlers Stadium and the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. In addition to these opportunities, students also competed in various business, marketing and information technology related competitive events. Congratulations to Thomas Kellicut, who placed 4th in Accounting I, qualifying him to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA this June! Honorable mentions go to Nate Seibold, who placed 6th overall in the category of Business Law.
Thomas will be joined in Anaheim by our newly inducted 2017-18 Region VI Vice President, Marley Kreger! Congratulations to all our competitors and thanks for a great conference!

HUHS has been named as a Level III AP Pacesetter school for the 2016 test results. What this means is that we have over 10% of our student body taking the tests and of that population, 60% or more have scored a 3 or above, a 3 is considered "passing". Of the 424 schools that were data-mined in 2015-16, 92 schools in Wisconsin were identified as a Level III AP Pacesetter school. Congratulations, AP Teachers and Students for all of your hard work!

This year Hartford Union High School is once again seeking the assistance of local businesses and community members to continue the unique learning experience with our Focus on Connections event. This event is required for all juniors to attend to simulate a month of financial responsibilities of their 27 year old self. Our event is scheduled for May 3, 2017.
As a volunteer, you will play a key part in assisting our students with paying their monthly bills, and choosing appropriate entertainment based on their salary and budget. If you, or someone you know, are interested in helping out please reply to Beth Hermann at 262-670-3200 ext. 208 or via email at

The date for this year's event is Wednesday, May 3, 2017. The scheduled times for the event is 7:30 AM - 2:30 PM. However, you should plan to arrive between 7:00 AM - 7:15 AM to check in at our Volunteer station. If you cannot commit to a full day, that's fine. We do offer a Shift A (7:00 AM - 10:30 AM) and Shift B (11:00 AM - 2:30 PM). This information will be included in the follow up materials.

District Decision and Appeals Process

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community,
The District Administration has developed a District Decision and Appeals Process that we believe will help all of us strengthen our communication, and help students, staff, parents, and community navigate the District's system more easily. The process was initially developed by your District Leadership Team, and then reviewed and endorsed by the Board of Education. The District Leadership Team will continue to update the Process periodically. A few, brief notes about the Process are in order.
- Attached, you will find the Purposes and Guide for the Process.
- Next, you will find the District Decision and Appeals Process. The far left column, Areas, lists the items about which you may need to make a contact. The remaining columns (Initial Contact, First Level Appeal, etc.) are the people you should contact - in order from left to right - to help you. Please follow the order given.
- The last page is the list of Descriptors/Definitions which define the terms used in the Areas (far left) column of the Process. That should help, too.
Please let us know your thoughts and suggestions about how to improve the Process. You should communicate with your Principal, Dan Dobner, or you may contact me directly...

The HUHS Scholarship Foundation Inc. provides scholarships to graduating seniors from HUHS who apply on line their senior year through the counseling department web site, generally right after the 1st of January each year. The number of scholarships vary annually generally there are over 40 scholarships ranging in value from $700 - $2,000 to selected students. The scholarship process is handled through HUHS and rating of scholarships and selection is handled through the Board of Directors of the foundation.

UPDATE!!! Central Middle School is participating in the Pack'er Up Donation Challenge. Special Education Teacher Sue Gebben is having her students collect, count and prepare items for donation to Goodwill in the hopes of winning the challenge and having Packer Great Donald Driver come to their school.
As of yesterday, they were at 45,000 plus items!!! Every little bit will help in these last weeks of the collection. Please, If you have any items for donation, please consider dropping it off at Central (1100 Cedar Street). Items can be dropped off any time during the day, or the first

ACT Testing
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year. Students can register for the ACT at
www.actstudent.org . When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850. Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test. The test fee for the ACT is $42.50 and the ACT with writing is $58.50. If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. The test dates for the 2016-2017 school year are:

Note: Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 28 (no cost to the student on February 28). When considering whether or not to sign up to take the April 8 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 28 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test based upon February results.

Boys Baseball Wins Conference Opener
|
 In Hartford Union's first baseball game of the season, coach Eric Vanden Acker saw his team was a little hesitant on the diamond.
That wasn't the case in the Orioles' Wisconsin Little Ten Conference opener Thursdayagainst rival Slinger.
"The biggest thing about Saturday was that we were being tentative," Vanden Acker said. "It was a big difference today."
Hartford Union was aggressive all game, which led to an 8-5 victory - its first of the season, after a 4-2 loss to Hortonville on Saturday.
Both teams went scoreless in the first inning Thursday. After a 1-2-3 top of the second by the Owls (0-1, 0-1 WLT), the home team exploded for four runs in the bottom half.
Myles Zimdars began with a double for Hartford (1-1, 1-0 WLT) and Brandon Teske followed with a walk. Zimdars stole third in the at-bat.
Cody Guetzke drove in Zimdars with a sacrifice fly to center field.
"It was important for us, after Saturdaywhere we were down 4-0, to get on top early," Vanden Acker said. "We knew this was Slinger's first game
and we wanted to put them at the disadvantage. We wanted to play ahead the entire game."

Girls Soccer - Hartford Union Earns First Win of Season
|
On a muddy field, goals don't always come easy in a soccer game.
Hartford Union made it look easy, though, against Appleton East on Tuesday. T
he Orioles scored in the first 15 seconds and went on to win the nonconference
game,
2-0.
"We talk a lot about, from the opening kickoff, going to play offense right away," Hartford Union coach Kevin Martin said. "Some teams want to defend, but then never cross halfway. We want to mix it up, but play forward. We want to play offense.
"It's worked a couple of times," Martin added. "We want to catch teams flat-footed."
Mallory Knight played the opening kickoff up to Madeline Hoxworth, who gave the Orioles (1-1) the early advantage.
"We came out strong and determined,"
Hoxworth said.
Knight added, "It's exciting. Coach always says to try and get the first goal in the first five minutes."
Playing from behind was tougher, given the sloppy field conditions.
"It was definitely hard to run," Hoxworth said.
Grabbing an early lead was obviously beneficial.
"It was huge because the great equalizer was the field," Martin said. "You could move the ball well, then hit a spot and get stuck in the mud."
Hartford controlled play the majority of the game, getting several shots on goal. Appleton East (0-1) countered with a few in the first half, but none were dangerous to goalkeeper Jorian Dietlemeier. Click here to read full Daily News Article.

Girls Soccer Preview

Small things prevented Hartford Union from winning its second consecutive Wisconsin Little Ten championship in 2016.
The Orioles registered three conference losses, and each were on the road by one score (2-1 at West Bend East, 1-0 at West Bend West and 3-2 at Oconomowoc). In addition, the season as a whole petered out in the final four games, as Kevin Martin's club allowed 13 goals in those contests. Not coincidentally, Hartford (13-8-2) lost all four.
Martin's defense admittedly is a sore spot as this season begins; the Orioles allowed three goals in their season-opening loss at Catholic Memorial.
Hartford lost two defenders and goalkeeper
Sarah Duncan to graduation last year. In Duncan's place, sophomores Jorian Dietlmeier and Maddy Sieczkowski will compete for the position.
"Our defensive back
line has some question marks coming into the season," Martin emailed the Daily News. "We have some young, strong defenders, but they are not tested at the varsity level
yet. We need to really get our defense in shape if we are going to make a run at the WLT title and into the playoffs."
Sophomore defenders Kayla Okla and Julia Stephans, juniors Maddi Lambie and Mandy Loga and senior Kendra Lindl will be part of a reconstructed back line which will rotate as many as eight on and off the pitch.
The five defensemen are among 11 returnees that will attempt to win the Orioles' fourth WLT title since 2011. Hartford brings back the bulk of its scoring, with a pair of seniors accounting for 41 of the 54 returning tallies.
Three-time All-WLT senior forward Megan Zickert was runner-up as 2016 league player of the year after scoring 21 goals and dealing nine assists.
She was also named Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association All-State honorable mention and to the Daily News' All-County team.

HUHS Booster Club Pancake Breakfast
|
The Booster Club is hosting it's first annual all you can eat pancake breakfast. Sunday, May 7th in the HUHS cafeteria. Tickets will be available for purchase in the Athletic Office starting Monday, April 10thwith either cash or check. Purchase price is $8.00 or $10.00 on the day of the event. We will be serving pancakes and sausage from 8:30-11:00 with a short recognition ceremony of some student athletes and their achievements including scholarships earned from Booster Club and H Club. Make it an early Mother's Day event and surprise mom a week early! Come out and support the Booster Club and our student athletes.
If you can't make it to the breakfast but would like to make a donation, that can also be submitted to the Athletic Office.
