Most Likely to Succeed

Based on the book by Tony Wagner and and Ted Dintersmith, Most Likely to Succeed is an edu-documentary upon the book shown this last August at the Milwaukee Film Festival and is currently being shown across the country.  The book and documentary encourage a new type of education for the 21st century (one similar to our freshmen cohort).  It follows students and parents through project-based learning and preparation for life after high school.

The Hartford Area Schools (HUHS, Erin, Neosho, Saylesville, Friess Lake) have decided to host this film here on  Thursday, January 28.  We have posted the event on  EventBrite.  You can log in to get your free e-ticket to attend as there are only 265 tickets (Drama Lecture capacity).
ACT and ACT WorkKeys Information for Juniors
Juniors at HUHS will participate in two, state-mandated standardized tests in March: the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys. Results from these tests provide school districts with data that assist in focusing and improving instruction for students to ensure they are prepared for success after high school. The data is also used to compare school districts across the state and with national averages as part of a larger accountability system for public schools.

College Readiness
The ACT is a well-known college-entrance exam that predicts students' likely success in completing college-level coursework, specifically in the areas of English, Reading, Writing, Math, and Science. This is the second year that all juniors in Wisconsin, including those at HUHS, will take the ACT. The test will occur on March 1 during the school day.

Career Readiness
More and more, attention is being given to career-readiness, recognizing that not all students will or should pursue a 4-year post-secondary degree. Whereas the ACT emphasizes academics and college-readiness, the ACT WorkKeys is a test focused on employability skills and career-readiness in the areas of applied mathematics, reading for information, and locating information. In addition to receiving scores in these three areas, those who perform well in all three can receive a National Career Readiness Certificate, signifying a person's employability skills at the bronze, silver, gold, or platinum level. All juniors will take the ACT WorkKeys on March 2.

Preparing for the ACT
Thousands of students take the ACT each year, often for high-stakes reasons. Therefore, resources abound that can help your child prepare for the ACT. Here are just a few:
Watch for more HUHS-specific information about ACT testing in future Involve newsletters. You can also visit the HUHS ACT webpage and the ACT and ACT WorkKeys websites for more test information.

If you missed the deadline, you can still submit a photo until 1/31 with a $25 fee. Please check the list to make sure that your senior submitted their photo. Questions, please contact [email protected].

Have you ordered a 2016 yearbook?
An HUHS 2016 yearbook can be ordered an paid for at anytime throughout the year through our eFunds website by clicking here. Students can also drop off a check ($65) in an envelope in the Business Office.  A yearbook is a great way for students to remember their high school memories!
Marker Recycling
Do you have dried out markers just laying around? Bring them to school! The environmental science club and class are collecting markers to be recycled through Crayola ColorCycle. Crayola will then use these markers to turn into new markers, playground furniture, and other plastic materials. We are collecting ALL brands, including Sharpies, highlighters, and dry erase markers. There is a collection bin in the attendance office and in the secured entrance of HUHS. If you have any questions please contact Rachel Arkens
News from the Counseling Department
ACT Testing
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org . When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $39.50 and the ACT with writing is $56.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.

HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. The test dates for the 2015-2016 school year are:
February 6, 2016                               April 9, 2016                                        June 11, 2016

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on March 1 (no cost to the student on March 1).  When considering whether or not to take the February or April ACT, it may be best for students to take the March 1 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June based upon March results.
