MSCS Announces Literacy Commitment to Boost Reading Across All Grades


When children enter the third grade, they’re no longer learning how to read. They’re reading to learn. And if they aren’t on grade level by the end of third grade, things will get tough.


According to Chief Academic Officer Jaron Carson, MSCS started with the third-grade commitment, but as the world evolves, so did we. And that’s why the former third-grade commitment is now the MSCS Literacy Commitment.

Memphis 13: 'They're all superheroes'

History was made 61 years ago when 13 Black first-graders were the first students to integrate into the legacy Memphis City Schools district. They are now known as the Memphis 13. Memphis artist Jamond Bullock said, "In my book, I think they’re all superheroes." Springdale Elementary School, one of the schools integrated in 1961, recently honored the Memphis 13, recognizing the courage they showed as children.

Wells Station ES Hype Morning Announcement

The students at Wells Station ES are greeted with a nontraditional way of listening to the morning announcements. Coach "DJ Farmer" brings excitement first thing in the morning by hyping up the students with her "DJ" voice.
