Dear Families:

I hope you all had a blessed Easter and enjoyed the break with your friends and family. Just like that May is upon us. The month of May will be filled with celebrations. Our third graders will be celebrating their First Communion and as a community we will be celebrating mothers, fathers and teachers. Parents and teachers share some key characteristics, after all, parents are also teachers and teachers are like parents to their students. Although each one is unique and special, both a parent and a teacher are a precious gift from God. This month and always, let’s remember what a noble profession teaching is and what a treasured gift mothers represent. I am blessed to be both a mother and a teacher. Although leaving the classroom to become an administrator was not easy and most definitely an adventure, Brene Brown puts it best when she says, “like many of you, parenting is my boldest and most daring adventure.” May we continue to be bold and daring in our parenting and our teaching adventures.

Dear Families,
I hope your Easter vacation provided you the opportunity to spend some quality time with your loved ones. We have entered the final six weeks of the 2018-19 school year. Our students have learned so much this year and are making their final preparations for the following grade. We are excited to see our first grade and third grade students showcase their learning this month through a Living Museum and World of Friends. June will be here before we know it, so let’s remember to take in all that God has blessed us with. As Albert Einstein said, “Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life”.

God bless,
Cristina Torres
We are excited to announce that MDJDA will be the recipient of the 2019 Re-Imagine Catholic Schools Award. Each year the Diocese recognizes one school that is leading the way in innovation, empowering learners and driving student achievement. This year, out of the 49 schools in the Diocese of San Diego, the award will go to MDJDA. We are extremely proud of our faculty and staff as well as our school community. We are pioneers. The work taking place at MDJDA is transforming our school community and will make an impact in our community at large and the world as our faith-filled, bilingual global leaders go on to make a difference of their own.
With your help and support we were able to fundraise over $15,000 during our Walk-a-thon. Thanks to your generosity, eight of our teachers were able to attend the LA Religious Education Conference. In addition, all eight math teachers along with Mrs. Torres attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Conference at the San Diego Convention Center. Everyone was excited to get back to their classrooms and implement the research based strategies they learned from experts in a variety of areas.
The Inaugural Blue and Gold Night was also a huge success and thanks to the generosity of the entire Mater Dei community, we are hiring an arts director to help us develop a comprehensive TK-12 visual and performing arts program. We will also be upgrading the sound and the lighting system in the theater to enjoy many performances for the years to come.
On Friday, May 10 we will have a special Mother’s Day celebration and on Friday, May 17 we will have a special Father’s Day celebration. We want to invite all mothers and grandmothers, and all fathers and grandfathers, with a max of three adults per family, to attend this special event. On each of these days, we will have two shows back to back in order to accommodate all families. All students will participate in both shows. The first show will go from 9:00-10:00 am and the second show will go from 10:15-11:15 am. The audience will be divided according to the the last name of the student. Last names A-L are assigned to the first show and last names M-Z are assigned to the second show. A family lunch will be provided for all attendees following the second performance. Lunch will go from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Parents can take their children home following the performance or the lunch. ECEP will be available for those families that need it. The link to reserve your seats will be sent this week.
The Padres will be hosting Catholic Schools Night on Friday, May 31, 2019. This game versus the Marlins will begin at 7:10 pm. All families are invited. Tickets range in price from $15–$38. To purchase tickets, please click on the link below. Ticket sales will end on Wednesday, May 8.
The 2019 summer school session will run from June 17 to July 19. You can choose to sign up for the morning academic session from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, the afternoon ECEP session filled with fun summer camp type activities from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, or for a full day that includes both sessions. Mrs. Faina Salter will be the summer school director. You can find more information in the attached flyer. Registration information will be shared soon. You may contact Mrs. Figueroa or Mrs. Salter with any questions.
