South County SELPA Insights is a monthly newsletter, brought to you by the South County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) team, full of special education information. This month, we will share common questions we have received from parents during our Parent IEP Academy. Keep reading to find resources and see how the SELPA can assist you and your family.

We understand that navigating the complexities of Special Education can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming for parents. Our goal is to provide clarity, support, and guidance to help you through this journey.

This month, we are dedicating our efforts to addressing some of the most common questions and concerns that parents have when seeking assistance for their children. We hope that by sharing these insights, we can make the process more manageable and less daunting for you. We are here to support you, every step of the way.

Do I have to agree to the IEP at the meeting? No. You can take it home for review, but you should sign for participation, as that notes you attended the meeting and participated.

What if I do not agree with the goals in the IEP? You can request an IEP meeting to discuss your concerns. This will allow you and the team to develop goals that everyone can agree are in the best interest of your child.

Can I request more services than what is provided? You can request an IEP meeting to discuss your request for additional services. The team will discuss the possibility of additional services or assessments based on data and their observations. It may be decided that additional services are or are not necessary.

I don't see my child making progress and he has an IEP, what do I do now? Request an IEP meeting to discuss your concerns and the areas you feel should be addressed.  

May I request a copy of my student's records? Yes. They are typically provided to you within five business days.

Where can I get more help? You can reach out to our Parent Liaisons for support. The SELPA office is here to assist with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child's IEP.

Where can I learn more about Special Education? Special Education Rights and Responsibilities by Disability Rights California is a great resource that explains special education services.

South Bay Union School District (SBUSD) Community Kick-Off

Our SELPA staff attended the South Bay Community Kick-off event and were able to meet many families. The event provided many free resources for families, including school supplies and haircuts for the students. Families were able to connect with local agencies and make positive connections. We are thankful for the opportunity to participate in a wonderful event for families.

Harborside Elementary Resource Fair

SELPA staff was delighted to be present at the Harborside resource fair. Families had the opportunity to learn about local resources and enjoy popsicles. Thank you for the invitation, we look forward to future collaboration.

Miracle League of San Diego

The Miracle League of San Diego provides children and adults with special needs the opportunity to play baseball in an organized league. The Miracle League of San Diego is seeking volunteers to act as buddies and assist students with disabilities in playing baseball. If you're interested in volunteering or registering a player, you can register here.

Parent IEP Academy

Our next five-part series of the Parent IEP Academy will begin on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. This series is a great way to learn more about the IEP process and connect with other parents If you would like to register for the Summer Parent IEP Academy, click to register English or Spanish.

Aug. 10 — NAVAL Base Coronado (MWR) Back-To-School Jam

Start the 2024-25 by finding information on local resources. Navy Region Southwest’s MWR Community Recreation cordially invites Coronado families to participate in a fun-filled event with various Back to School resources and school supplies giveaways. The Back-to-School jam will be at Turner Field aboard Naval Amphibious Base Coronado from 10 a.m. to noon.

Aug. 15 to Sept. 12 — Parent IEP Academy Summer Series

Interested in increasing your understanding of the individualized education program (IEP) process? Do you want to feel confident that you have the necessary tools to fully participate in your child’s IEP? Register now for the Parent IEP Academy, which will meet Thursdays on Zoom from 11 a.m. to noon.

Spanish Registration / English Registration

Aug. 20 — Coronado Unified Ice Cream Social

Families who are new to the Coronado School District are invited to start the new school year off by getting to know your area military and civilian community resources while meeting other new families and school administrators. Event will be at the Coronado Unified School District office from 3 to 5 p.m. For more information view flyer.
