Dear MacLaren parents,

In the fall, we offered several seminars for parents that were akin to our Humane Letters class. This semester, we are excited to offer a wider range of class options as part of an ongoing Parent Saturday Series. We invite all parents to join us for one of these classes exploring foundations of the MacLaren curriculum.

We are offering three different classes on Saturday, March 1, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Each class is capped at 20, but we need at least eight participants to put on a class. If you do sign up for a class that does not garner enough sign ups, we will ask you if you would like to join a different group instead.

The focus of each of these classes is a foundational part of our curriculum:

  • Kathryn Maslow (Assistant Head of School and Math Curricular Lead) – Singapore Math Bar Models

Bar models are a foundational problem-solving tool in MacLaren’s K-8 math curriculum. Ms. Maslow will help parents understand the different types of bar models and their uses and then lead a workshop in which parents will solve a number of problems on their own, starting with third-grade problems and working up to some middle school problems. No preparation required.

  • Grant Cooper (Upper School Dean of Faculty and Lit/Comp Curricular Lead) – Middle School Writing Program

Learn about the foundations of our writing program and how you can support your child in this essential part of the MacLaren curriculum. Mr. Cooper will give a brief presentation and then lead parents through a writing workshop based on a text from the curriculum. No preparation required.

  • Pam Burrell (Art Curricular Lead) and Mariah Ziemer (Upper School art teacher) – Studio Art Foundations: The Process Doodle

Based on the eighth-grade studio curriculum, this hands-on workshop focuses on the basics of color theory as it is applied to the colored pencil “process doodle.” This drawing incorporates several elements of art—particularly line and color—and the technical aspects of blending that create smooth transitions between colors. Both Mrs. Burrell and Ms. Ziemer will walk parents through the skills needed and then allow ample work time. No preparation required; if you have a favorite set of colored pencils, you may bring those, or we will provide you with materials.

RSVP by February 25

Once a class is confirmed, participants will be sent information about logistics.

Thank you for partnering with us in this community of learners!

Sincerely,

Bridget Rector
