UPPER SCHOOL PARENTS

We're excited to introduce a WhatsApp platform designed exclusively for the Upper School parent community. This voluntary platform aims to foster a sense of community and engagement among parents by providing a convenient resource for sharing important news, events, and discussions related to the Upper School.

Within the WhatsApp Community, you’ll have the opportunity to create and join specific groups tailored to your interests, whether it’s related to sports, specific classes, or other relevant topics. These groups will facilitate easier communication and provide a space for like-minded parents to connect and collaborate.

We hope you join us in making this a vibrant space for communication and support!

A Unique Way to Talk about TikTok with Your Child

I thank my daughter, Tessa, for this guest blog. She wrote it as the introduction to a paper for a college course this past Spring. The paper had to deal with screen time issues. Tessa discusses TikTok and, most importantly, links to 7 TikTok posts that came into her feed. When watched with your child, these clips provide a unique, and I would add an awesome, way to have a conversation about TikTok and related media without having to look directly at your child’s feed (if they have TikTok).

How Do TikTok, Snapvhat, YouTube and Instagram Compare?

It has been interesting and not the least bit surprising that social media apps have become far more similar than different. It makes perfect sense since companies see what young people use on other apps and incorporate such features into their own apps. For example, we think of Snapchat and its hallmark disappearing messages, but did you know that TikTok and Instagram have incorporated this feature as an option into their apps?

On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good

Elise Loehnen

A groundbreaking exploration of the ancient rules women unwittingly follow in order to be considered "good," revealing how the Seven Deadly Sins still control and distort their lives and illuminating a path toward a more balanced, spiritually complete way to live

Women congratulate themselves when they resist the doughnut in the office break room. They celebrate their restraint when they hold back from sending an e-mail in anger. They feel virtuous when they wake up at dawn to get a jump on the day. They put others' needs ahead of their own and believe this makes them exemplary. In On Our Best Behavior, journalist Elise Loehnen explains that these impulses--often lauded as unselfish, distinctly feminine instincts--are actually ingrained in women by a culture that reaps the benefits, via an extraordinarily effective collection of mores known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen: The Essential Conversations You Need to Have with Your Kids Before They Start High School

Michelle Icard

The fourteen essential conversations to have with your tween and early teenager to prepare them for the emotional, physical, and social challenges ahead, including scripts and advice to keep the communication going and stay connected during this critical developmental window.

Trying to convince a middle schooler to listen to you can be exasperating. Indeed, it can feel like the best option is not to talk! But keeping kids safe--and prepared for all the times when you can't be the angel on their shoulder--is about having the right conversations at the right time. From a brain growth and emotional readiness perspective, there is no better time for this than their tween years, right up to when they enter high school.

Distilling Michelle Icard's decades of experience working with families, Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen focuses on big, thorny topics such as friendship, sexuality, impulsivity, and technology, as well as unexpected conversations about creativity, hygiene, money, privilege, and contributing to the family.

Look Closer

David Ellis

Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer.

When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web... and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl and part Strangers on a TrainLook Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.

Resetting Sleep Habits for Back-to-School

Last week in clinic, I had a spunky, petite 12-year-old — I will call her Lucy — and her mom. When I brought up tech and sleep (which I nearly always do), Lucy said she does sleep with her phone in her bedroom. (She had on a smartwatch, and I imagine if the phone is allowed in the room, that is likely to be allowed as well.) When I discussed why and how to ensure great sleep and mentioned keeping devices out of the bedroom at night, Lucy said, “How about I keep it in my closet?”

I smiled.

Consistent Parenting: How to Unlock the Secret

“Being consistent is the hardest thing of all,” many parents tell us. And it’s so true—it’s easy to lay down a rule and then let it slide when you’re tired or in a hurry. In this article, Janet Lehman explains why consistency is the key to your child’s behavior—and tells you ways to keep on track when you feel like giving up. When your child is young, he starts to learn simple math. The way he learns is through a process called “rehearsal and repetition.” At first, simple addition and subtraction are the most alien concepts in the world to him. But slowly, he begins to understand that two and two equal four—and then he builds on that knowledge.
