school, or have taken gap years. You may be trying to help your student, but it can be seen as an added stress and additional pressure on them. Allow your student some time to adjust themselves into the college community. With some time, the student will become more open to being active, interacting with others, and more. Being a helicopter parent may come naturally to some, as you are also worried for their academic well-being. However, this may be an added stressor on students. Give them space to learn about themselves, the school, their new opportunities, and everything else.
College Updates
CUNY mandates that all students taking in-person and hybrid classes be fully vaccinated and upload proof of up-to-date vaccination in CUNYfirst. Maintaining up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination status is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself and keep CUNY safe.

Advice From A Student: How To Help Your College Student -Start of the Semester
Welcome to our John Jay family! We are happy to have your student join us at John Jay for their college path. My name is Brenda Jiménez Villalva and I am a John Jay alumna. I graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, with a concentration in translation and interpreting. Now that I have completed this chapter in my life, I would like to share some advice that has helped me during my time at John Jay. It must be nerve-wrecking for your children to start this new chapter and you would like to know what can you do to help them with this transition.

My advice to you as parents is to encourage your student to get involved at John Jay. As someone who made this transition five years ago, getting involved helped me discover my interests and make connections with faculty and staff.

I remember telling my friend a few weeks ago as we reflected on being college graduates who knew signing up for leadership positions at two student-led clubs would later help me discover the Peer Ambassador Leadership Program and becoming one until my graduation and that I will forever be grateful for the people I met during my journey. This is the power of getting involved with John Jay. Some students such as my friend, did not think getting involved was a big deal but I say otherwise based on my experience. Apart from making connections, I also made new friends within clubs and the Peer Ambassador Leadership Program who have the same desire of creating a change in the world and becoming advocates for justice, as John Jay encourage us.

Congratulations to your student for starting this new chapter! I am wishing them the best of luck during their college career.
