How To Help Your College Student
Staying on Track for Graduation
Hello! I’m Ryan-Alexa, a junior majoring in Forensic Science with a concentration in molecular biology. There are many things that your student should focus on throughout the semester, and one of these include staying on track to graduate on time. Staying on track to graduate on time can be easily achieved! Here are some tips to help get your student started.

Firstly, one thing your student can do is to know the graduation requirements. For example, being aware of the different general education requirements that need to be fulfilled is helpful. If your student is unsure about these requirements or how to complete them, they should attend an appointment with an advisor at the Academic Advisement Center. At this appointment, the student will most likely set
up a multi semester plan to discuss their necessary courses for each semester up until graduation. Another option is to look through Degree Works on CUNY First to see what course requirements need to still be completed.

Another tip for your student is to ask for help when they need it. Staying on track consists of going to professors office hours and even tutoring if they are struggling in a subject. The Math and Science Resource Center as well as the Writing Center is always a good option for tutoring. Oftentimes, professors even give extra credit for attending sessions throughout the semester!
The last tip to staying on track for graduation is for the student to recognize and focus on their goals. Something that worked for me was to envision why I was pursuing my major, and ultimately why I wanted to pursue my career choice in the first place. Having these goals in mind, whatever they may be, can encourage your student to continue to be motivated despite the challenges they would face throughout their academic career and beyond.
Office Feature: Academic Advisement Center
In the Academic Advisement Center (AAC), we help undergraduate students explore, define, and achieve their academic goals. Academic Advisors explain all degree requirements with a specific focus on general education requirements and provide ongoing academic support all the way to graduation. We also work with students to identify experiential opportunities like internships, study abroad programs and on campus leadership positions to help enhance their overall college experience, deepen their connection to the college and better prepare them for life post John Jay.
Advice From a Student:
What a Student Goes Through During Finals
Hi! I’m Brianna, a senior majoring in Emergency Services Administration with a concentration in Fire Service. When a student is picking their classes for the next semester they can go through a myriad of emotions. Stress because they are unsure of their path or because the classes they wanted are full. They can also be happy as they start to feel more sure of their path or because the classes they wanted are available. It is important for them to know that they have support through this. That support can be you as parents and family guiding them through this journey that you may have been on before, the Academic Advisement Center to advise them, counseling through the Wellness Center, as well as their major departments for advice. The point is that everybody understands the struggle and is willing to help guide your students throughout their time here at John Jay.

Why Should You Be Active in the Parent and Family Association?
The Office of Student Transition Programs understands and recognizes the vital role parents and family members play in the academic success of their students. Because family members are a very important part of our College community, we will make every effort to promote family communication and involvement. Whether you are family members of new or returning students, we hope your experience with John Jay is positive and rewarding.

The purpose of the Parent and Family Association is to:
  • Assist family members in navigating campus resources, services, and programs
  • Assist family members in supporting their students and empowering them to take responsibility while enrolled at the College
  • Enhance communication between the College and family members
  • Develop a sense of community amongst John Jay families to provide support, advice, and opportunities for involvement.

This year, we will be sending newsletters, hosting webinars and virtual meet-ups!
