Young Braden loves his routine.
The predictable rhythm of his day makes him feel comfortable. But all that changes when his mom gets a new job, they move to a new place, and he starts going to a new school, too. Now he has less time to sleep, eat and brush his teeth before catching the bus. But most of all, he misses how he and his mom used to play chess together before they left to start their day! Braden loves chess! It helps him relax.
This whole alteration of his routine definitely feels like the wrong move to him.
Coping with all these changes at once is very challenging and he struggles with feeling overwhelmed and upset. A girl on the bus notices his distress and tries to help him, which he rebuffs at first. But her gentle patience and persistence help him create a new routine and discover that while he may still get frustrated from time to time, he can make new friends and even have more opportunities to share the enjoyment of his favorite pastime!
