Over the past ten weeks, our San Miguel kinder and first grade students participated in Malashock Dance Math in Motion program. The Math in Motion program is an innovative approach to learning that combines grade-level Common Core Standards in math with California Visual and Performing Arts standards in dance. This program is made available to our students, in part, due to a $2,000 grant from the California Arts council.
This week our students showcased their learning in a culminating dance performance choreographed and taught by Malashock Dance Instructors. The Malashock Dance professional teaching artists worked with a carefully crafted curriculum focused on artistic development, social cooperation, critical thinking, innovative problem solving, and mathematical reasoning. Our students engaged in high-level critical thinking and used innovative habits of mind to find ways to express mathematical concepts through dance.
