Message from our Principal
Dear San Miguel Families,

Happy first week of Summer Break! What an exciting time! Our students finished their last official distance learning lessons and Zoom meetings of the 2019-2020 school year. I enjoyed popping into classes to see the students and participate in some of their end of the year activities. We also held the 6th grade Drive-Thru Promotion Ceremony. It was great to see all of the families celebrating along with our staff in this creative and fun way of honoring our promoting students. I want to give a huge thank you to our PTA and San Miguel staff for pitching in to make this a memorable experience for our 6th grade leaders.

Now that our school year has come to an end, I want to say how proud I am of our teachers and students for rising to the challenges of distance learning. For those who would like to continue learning over the Summer, the district is providing additional distance learning opportunities for students. The deadline to register for teacher directed learning is June 21, 2020, so please submit the Summer Distance Learning Survey as soon as possible. For those who will not be participating in the teacher directed learning opportunity, our students will continue to have access to the online programs they have been using all year. We hope you will take advantage of the extended Chromebook usage over the Summer Break.

As you are aware, these past few months have posed several challenges with regards to providing quality education while adhering to the safety guidelines of leaders. However, this time has also provided profound opportunities for our students and teachers to engage in 21st Century learning, collaboration and problem solving. It has also been a time of reflection and personal growth. This time has reminded me of the value of family and community, and the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In order for me to honor these things in my own life, I have elected to step down from my position as principal of San Miguel Elementary School. This was not an easy decision to make, as I adore my San Miguel students and staff. You all have become like family to me and I am grateful for the time that we got to grow and learn together. I have no doubt that you will continue to excel in the upcoming school year. Please give your students a big hug or high five from me and let them know I will be expecting to see great things when I return for our rescheduled Leadership Day next year.

Now for the good news, I am thrilled to announce that Mrs. Julie Jones, our interim principal, has been selected to continue on as the principal of San Miguel beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. It gives me great joy and peace to know that our San Miguel community will have continuity as you carry on with the great works that we began together. I know that your student leaders will be in very qualified hands. Please see the linked brief bio to learn more about Mrs. Jones. You can join me in officially welcoming her to San Miguel by emailing her at jjones@lemongrovesd.net.

I wish you all a safe and healthy Summer. Remember to check the district and San Miguel websites regularly for updates regarding registration and the upcoming school year. Should you have any questions or need additional support over the Summer, our district office is open to assist you.

Most sincerely,
Mrs. Richmond
