Message from San Miguel
To Our San Miguel Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the tragic death of George Floyd and countless others who have lost their lives due to racialized violence. We also acknowledge the protests and riots that have occurred in the aftermath. The recent events in our community and across the country cause sadness, fear, grief and outrage as we continue to witness present day racism.

With the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial injustices happening around us, we understand that these are difficult and overwhelming times. As a parent you may be wondering if you should talk about these current events with your children. And if so, then how? School age children have no doubt seen news coverage, heard adults or older siblings talking about George Floyd or have experienced racism first hand. As difficult as these conversations might be, they are necessary. Children will often draw their own conclusions about what they are hearing and seeing, which is why they need an adult to guide them and help them process their thoughts and feelings.

Included below are two well written articles that can help guide you when having these conversations about race and racism. Please know that we are here to support you. We care about all of our San Miguel Families and we are here for you. Change is slow and it can be frustrating, it is possible. We truly believe that our young student leaders, with the guidance of their families and educators, will be that change.

Until then, we want to remember that even though this is a difficult time, we also want to remember that this is a time of celebration for our students and families. We celebrate our preschoolers and 6th graders who will be promoting this week. We celebrate the end of the school and good health. We celebrate our families for taking on the challenge of teaching alongside us during the most uncertain times.

As we head into this final week of the 2019-2020 school year, we thank you again for all of your support this year. We’re better together! If you need further support please reach out to School Social Worker, Mrs. Robinson at CRobinson@lemongrovesd.net or Principal, Mrs. Richmond at TRichmond@lemongrovesd.net .

Wishing you continued health and wellness,
Your San Miguel Family
