Triple P in Elkhart County Parent Newsletter - May 2023

This Month in Triple P: Empowering Parents across the community!

We have partnered with Goshen Community Schools and Nappanee Public Library for three events in the next couple of weeks that we are sure will appeal to a lot of parents in our community no matter where you live!

At 5:15 p.m. on Monday, May 8, Goshen Intermediate School is hosting Triple P presentations for preparing parents and students for kindergarten! At 5 p.m. the following Monday, May 15, parents of soon-to-be 5th or 6th graders preparing for classes in intermediate or middle schools will be invited to the same location for a Triple P presentation on succeeding in middle school!

The presentations will be given in English as well as Spanish, and there will be snacks and fun activities for kids at both sessions. Find sign-up links and shareable flyers in the Upcoming Events section below.

Also on Monday, May 8, parents with pre-teens or teenagers may want to head over to the Nappanee Public Library at 6 p.m. for a free Triple P presentation on coping with anxiety, an extra relevant topic during May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month (the newsletter background is green in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month).

In this presentation, parents will learn about strategies they can use to talk to their teens and pre-teens about anxiety, stress, depression and mental health in a way that builds resiliency in parents as well as their children. These strategies are helpful for adults to cope with their anxieties as well!

All attendees of this presentation will be included in a drawing for a $25 gift card to either Martin's Super Market or Main Street Roasters cafe in downtown Nappanee.

You can find the sign-up link and a shareable flyer for this event in the Upcoming Events section as well.

Welcome our newest Team Leader, Jenn!

Jenn Borden has joined the Triple P team as Child Enrichment Activity Team Leader! In this role, Jenn will coordinate our efforts to provide top-quality childcare activities during Triple P events and will be exploring opportunities to bring child-focused activities together with parent support.

Many of you may already know Jenn as she has been a longtime provider of childcare for Triple P, and is now coordinating our activities at Goshen First Fridays (read more below). We are very glad to have her aboard!

Join us at Fables for Goshen First Fridays!

We are back at Fables Books in downtown Goshen for the city's First Fridays celebrations every month! From 5 to 7 (or 7:30 depending on how many kids we have with us) on May 5, we will be there for First Fridays Green Day making colorful, custom bookmark crafts with kiddos and sharing Triple P information with parents.

We were there for one of the first really beautiful days of the spring on April 7, Good Friday, making Easter- and Spring-themed bookmarks with an absolute ton of happy kids and families! We lost count, but we figure we saw at least 50 kids during our time there.

Thank you to our volunteers, Jenn and Sheila, for helping the kids decorate their crafts, thank you to all the families and friends who came out to see us, and thank you again to our friends at Fables for welcoming us back! We hope to see you all again on Friday!

Meet a Practitioner: Yessenia Cisneros

Meet Yessenia Cisneros! Yessenia has been a Triple P practitioner since December 2021, and has made a big impact in that time!

Yessenia works as a translator and parent liaison at Woodland Elementary School in Elkhart, so she has connections to local parents at her school. She has always enjoyed working for the community, and was excited that Triple P helped benefit mothers like herself who struggle finding the correct discipline or are at a point in their parenting where they feel challenged by their child's behavior.

Her favorite part of Triple P is the interactions she has with families and knowing that Triple P helps create a positive impact. Her words of wisdom for any current or future practitioners: “It’s OK to not know everything, it will come to you sooner than later!”

In addition to her work at Woodland, Yessenia does presentations for Triple P across the community in English and Spanish. She has also helped spread the word about Triple P at community fairs and on social media.

She has been married to her husband, Javier, for 19 years. They have four children: Natalie 19, Camille 14, Lilianna 13, and Javier 8. A fun fact about Yessenia is that fall is her favorite season because it allows her to wear shorts and a sweater!
