KCKPS Opens New Welcome Center | |

It's official!
The brand new Welcome Center at Central Office opened after a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 23.
The center’s goal is to help create a more accessible, more equitable, and welcoming school district to all newcomers.
Specifically, the center will help families navigate the enrollment process at KCKPS.

The KCKPS Summer Learning Program is Underway | |
The Summer Learning Program at KCKPS is off and running.
Students began their summer school courses on Monday, June 5, and will continue until June 28.
Approximately 4,453 KCKPS students registered for the Summer Learning Program.
During the first week of classes, approximately 3,740 students attended.
Summer learning is designed to be fun and interactive, while providing an educational program for current PK-12th students.

The Summer Learning Program Brings Back Driver's Education Classes | |

After being absent for nearly 20 years, the Driver’s Education Program at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is back on the road again.
With the support of F. L. Schlagle High School, the program has returned to Washington High School as part of the Summer Learning Program.
The course is free for students, thanks to a partnership with KCKPS and Kansas City Kansas Community College.

The Summer Learning Program Has Students Taking Part in African Dance Workshop

The rhythmic beat of African drums echoed throughout the hallways of McKinley Elementary School as part of the Summer Learning Program experience.
Fourth and fifth-grade students took part in an African Dance Workshop, focused on teaching them basic knowledge in the art of drumming and dance from West Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.

Open registration for Virtual Learning closed on June 15th. For those that signed up, you should have received an email confirmation.
If you did not receive a confirmation after signing up, please check your spam and junk folders in your email.
If you signed up, but have been unable to locate your confirmation email, you may reach out to Dr. Alma Hall, Coordinator of Virtual Learning to check on the receipt of your registration at [email protected] .
For those that registered, more information will be provided in a July via email.
This information will include device pick up instructions, contact information for different types of questions that may come up, and next step directions to start next school year.

You're Invited: Youth Think Tank | |

The youth in the Kansas City community is invited to join a think tank discussion on preventing violence in our schools.
Middle and High School students will work together to support KCKPS to combat violence and mobilize necessary resources to support families.
The Youth Think Tank will take place Tuesday, June 27 from 10 am until 1 pm at Central Office, located at 2010 N. 59th St. in KCK.
This event is presented by the Social Justice & Equity Coalition of Wyandotte County & Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.
Lunch will be provided.

Join our Department of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in celebrating ourselves.
The second annual When You See Conference is a one-day event that features workshops and guest speakers focused on how to better understand ourselves and those who look differently than us.
This event provides free breakfast and lunch.

Save the Date: Back to School Fair | |

The 23rd Annual Back to School Fair is just a few months away.
The big event will take place Saturday, August 5, from 8am until 1pm at F.L. Schlagle High School, located at 2214 N. 59th St. in Kansas City, Kansas.
Students will receive school supplies, take part in health screenings, enjoy inflatable games, music, snacks and more.
Parents must provide proof of residency in Wyandotte County.
Parents are also required to bring children.

KCKPS Students Shined Brightly at KSHSAA State Track and Field Competition | |
|
Each Spring, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) holds the Track and Field State Championship meet.
Qualifiers from all over Kansas prepared to compete.
KCKPS had three high schools represented in the finals. Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, Wyandotte High School, and Washington High School.

KCKPS Students Recognized for Being Great Examples in the Classroom
| |
|
Silver City Elementary School student Quentin Kumke is the latest recipient of the Empowerment Grows Opportunities (EGO) Student of the Week Award.
The award was presented to the kindergarten student on Tuesday, May 23. He was nominated by his teacher Jamie VanBrocklin.
She selected him because he always follows the rules and was a great role model to have in the classroom.
Quentin was one of several students to receive this honor.

Blaize McNeal is an Early Childhood scholar at North Central Office Early Childhood Center.
He was nominated by Ellen Gatewood, a teacher at NCO ECC.
Blaize has been a student at NCOECC for two years.
As one of the older students in the class this year, it has been a privilege to watch him grow into a natural leader and role model for his fellow students.

Arteeyona Jenkins was nominated by Welborn Elementary School teacher Bailey Chance under the pillar of Outstanding Academics.
She states that Arteeyona should be named student of the month for her readiness to learn every day, and she is always looking for more work to be done.
She has excelled in her academic learning this year and enjoys reading and teaching classmates the math concepts we are learning that day.

Ivanna Vazquez-Verdugo is a 6th-grade student at Gloria Willis Middle School.
She was nominated for Student of the Month in the category of outstanding academics.
Ivanna has maintained a grade point average of 4.0.
Her English teacher remarked that Ivanna is always on task, participating in class, and volunteering for anything asked.

Shayne McRae is a graduating senior at F.L. Schlagle High School.
He was nominated by Mr. David Herrington under the pillar of scholarship and community recognition.
Shayne is an outstanding Stallion who finished his high school career with distinction.
He currently holds a 3.7 GPA and is an outstanding example of academic excellence.

Brayan is the very first USD 500 student to graduate from the new Correctional Offices Program in partnership between our Diploma+ Department and the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.

PlanKCK Innovation Lab on Housing | |
|
On behalf of the Unified Government, FUSE Corps Innovations Lab will be convening an innovation lab on housing in Kansas City, KS.
This interactive experience will explore the complex web young families and the unhoused navigate to find stable housing in Kansas City, KS.
The lab will take place Thursday, June 22, from 10am until 2pm, at First Baptist Church of Kansas City Kansas, located at 500 Nebraska Ave., in KCK.

Juneteenth in the Dotte Celebration 2023 | |

Celebrate Juneteenth in Wyandotte County at the 2023 Juneteenth Festival.
There will be community vendors, music, art, and lots of great food.
The celebration will be held Sunday, June 18, from 3pm until 7pm, at Klamm Park, located at 2515 N. 27th in KCK.
Attendees are welcomed to bring tents, tables and chairs.
There will also be a special ceremony at 2pm at the Quindaro Ruins.
