FROM THE ARCHIVE:

Follow Jesus Through the Final Week

Follow Jesus Through That Final Week.

by Msgr. Charles Pope

At the heart of our faith is the Paschal mystery: the Passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. All of salvation history leads up to and goes forth from these saving events. The purpose of this post is to describe Jesus' final week. We call this "Holy Week" because Jesus' public ministry culminates with His suffering, death, and resurrection.

What follows is a brief description of each day of Holy Week. I hope you will print out this flyer (Walking-with-Jesus-In-Holy-Week) and read it each day this week. Prayerfully walk with Jesus in His most difficult yet most glorious week.

Some scholars of Scripture scoff at the idea that we can construct a day-by-day journal of Jesus' last week. There are historical gaps and things in the different accounts that don't add up perfectly. Further, St. John posits a slightly different time-frame (shifted by one day) for the Last Supper relative to Passover. The following sequence follows the timing of the synoptic (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) accounts. Despite certain scholarly doubts, the accounts really do add up pretty well if one uses a little imagination and sees the differences not as factual discrepancies but rather only as variations in the level of detail.

So read this chronology as a likely, but not certain, outline of the last week of Jesus. READ MORE

Wednesday, April 23, 2025

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Beth Am Synagogue

2501 Eutaw Place, Baltimore, MD 21217

This spring marks 80 years since the end of the Holocaust and WWII. With antisemitism’s rise in the past decade and dominating the headlines since Oct. 7, Rabbi Burg joins Forward enterprise reporter Arno Rosenfeld for a candid conversation about the issues, challenges and responsibility Jewish journalists face when covering antisemitism.

About Arno Rosenfeld:

Arno Rosenfeld is enterprise reporter at the Forward. An award-winning investigative journalist, he has chronicled the Jewish American response to rising fears over antisemitism, covered Jewish college students confronting hostile political climates on campus, reported on local communities grappling with a surge of white supremacist propaganda, and exposed the deep rifts among national organizations over political issues.

Rosenfeld is based in Washington, D.C., and has reported for the Forward from Charlottesville, VirginiaColleyville, TexasTel AvivBerlin, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and elsewhere. He won the Boris Smolar Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting from the American Jewish Press Association in 2023 for his article on the experience of Jewish students engaged in Israel politics at George Washington University.

Diocese of Providence welcomes Bishop Lewandowski

by Christopher Gunty

A few hours after it was announced in Rome and Washington April 8 that Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., would be the new bishop of the Diocese of Providence, R.I., he greeted the people of his new flock in an emotional news conference from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s a wonderful moment – a little overwhelming,” he said. Bishop Lewandowski currently serves as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

He acknowledged his introduction by Monsignor Albert A. Kinney, who has served as diocesan administrator since the previous bishop, Archbishop Richard G. Henning, became archbishop of Boston last fall. Noting that his last name can be hard to say, he said, “Just call me Bruce or Bishop Bruce, that’s easier.” READ MORE
