News from St. Patricia Parish
"In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” -Matthew 3:1-2
Dear Parishioners,

The Second Sunday of Advent is already upon us! I hope you are all using your Advent Wreath to prepare spiritually for Christmas and be ready for the relatives and friends that you will celebrate with at Christmas.

At the Christmas dinner table, we hopefully sit around a round table. At a round table, those seated really have to look at each other. With an oblong table, you can ignore most of the people.

By really looking at someone, it can change our perception of that person. We are not looking down at them but are making a connection to them.

True humility leads us to community. God is the source of all that is, and everything we have comes from God. No one is better than anyone else in God’s eyes. All are equal. When we realize that God is God — and we are not — then, we have true humility because we recognize our place in the world.

We need to see others as God sees them, which might help us to be less judgmental and more loving.
At the many Christmas gatherings, whether you are seated at a round table or not, look across the table at your next meal and imagine how God sees that person.

Sometimes, we have family issues that keep us from encountering the relatives. Perhaps, the Advent Wreath at your kitchen table will remind you to make a regular prayer time each day. The Little Blue Book that some of you purchased encourages all of us to take time for prayer each day.

A day is comprised of a total of 1,440 minutes. I am asking you to give six minutes out of the 1,440 minutes in a day to prayer during the four weeks of Advent. You can give more than six minutes if you wish. But the main goal is to pray every day.

People who pray regularly will tell you that it works best if you do it at a set time every day. The key is to make it part of your schedule, not something you try to squeeze in whenever. It can vary at times, but you need a basic pattern. You cannot simply say, “I’ll do it when I get a chance.”
With prayers for you and yours this Advent season,
Father Mike Meany
