The image of God as light pervades the Old Testament and the New. Isaiah prohesied the coming of the light as a comfort to a suffering people. The Gospel of Matthew ties this prophecy to Jesus' own suffering at the news of the arrest of John the Baptist. After Jesus withdrew at this news, he entered a new period of his ministry in which he began to preach publicly that the kingdom of God was at hand. He invited disciples to share in this work and we recognize that this invitation extends to us a disciples as well.
