Pet blessing at St. A's last Sunday

St. Augustine's Parish Life Connections

October 8, 2026

From the Rector

Dear Friends in Christ,

I’m excited to announce to you a new member of the church staff: Orlando Maldonado. As St. A’s new Building Manager, Orlando will oversee the care and long-term stewardship of the church building in its present form, while also helping to plan for the future of this beloved facility that houses our worship, mission, ministry and community.

As you may recall, earlier this year the vestry discerned the need for this additional, focused role as we continue in a season of capital discernment and improvement. As we contemplate several potential large-scale building projects with overlapping impacts on the church’s aging mechanical systems and physical structure, we knew it would be essential to have a skilled team member who could understand and oversee the coordination and integration of projects. Orlando will work closely with our sexton Pisa for routine maintenance, as well as with the Buildings & Grounds team and vestry leadership on long-term facilities strategy.

Orlando works full-time in production, engineering, and project management capacities at a nearby manufacturing facility. I am delighted to have him taking on this part-time role here at St. A’s. I look forward to the skill and perspective he brings to the table, as we continue to invest in our property, to ensure a safe, functional and well-maintained church home now and for many generations to come! Please join me in welcoming Orlando.

In peace and hope,

Nadia

Upcoming Adult Forums on Alleviating Hunger: following the service

We are excited to spotlight two ways St. A's is partnering with local organizations and efforts to alleviate hunger and feed God's children.

This Sunday, October 11: Hearts and Hands Community Fridge

St. A's has joined with three Evanston churches to create and support Hearts and Hands Community Fridge, an addition to the Evanston Community Fridges Network of resources for alleviating hunger in the Evanston area. St. A's is responsible for stocking and maintaining the new fridge for two weeks, beginning this Sunday. Parishioner Cynthia Doucet will share more about this community-run resource and how you can be part of this outreach effort. You can start by bringing some food items on Sunday: small bags of rice, beans, fresh fruit or veggies, small lunch or snack packets.

Sunday, October 18: Meals on Wheels

We are excited to welcome Will McFarland, Director of Development at Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois. Meals on Wheels is a 2026 St. A's Christian Outreach grant recipient. Will oversees community partnerships and volunteer engagement to support the organization's mission of delivering nutritious meals and wellness checks to our homebound neighbors. Come hear about their impactful work, learn more about the food insecurity and social isolation facing older adults and individuals with disabilities right here in the community, and discover how you can get involved alongside fellow St. Augustine’s parishioners.

St. A's Book Group: This Evening, Thursday, October 8, 7:15 p.m.

You are invited to a discussion of Maurice by E.M. Forster this evening, Thursday, October 8, at 7:15 p.m. The meeting will be held both in Puhlman Hall and on Zoom (pw: lacroix). Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t participated in one of our previous meetings. Questions? Please contact Sue Nebel.

Family Promise Host Week Starts This Sunday

There will be three Family Promise families moving in on Sunday. Many thanks to everyone from St. Augustine’s and St. Elisabeth’s who have already signed up as volunteers. We still have a few openings for helpers: Tues, Oct. 13- dinner host partner; and overnighters: Wed & Thurs. If you are able to help please click here to sign up.

One of the best things about serving in our Family Promise ministry is the time spent with others, the guests and the other volunteers. You may already know some volunteers from St. A’s, but if you don’t, working together is a chance to get to know someone who, like yourself, wants to help families in need. It has been a pleasure to get to know some of our partners from St. E’s through serving together. Volunteers are the heart of the program and every effort to help is appreciated. If you have questions or comments, please contact coordinators: Kathy Gander or Julia Joehl. Thank you.

Think of a time when someone made space for you.

How did that feel?

There’s plenty good room at God’s table —

so pull up a chair and sit down!

All Saints' Sunday, November 1: Necrology Names Due by October 26

A beautiful tradition at St. A’s is remembering the names of our beloved dead on All Saints’ Sunday. The names will be represented visually as we have done in the last few years. To be included in this remembrance, please submit the name(s) of those you love but see no longer by completing the form found in the pews (or here) or by emailing Theresa. All submissions must be received no later than Monday, October 26. All those whose ashes are interred in our Columbarium and all who have been buried from St. A’s in the last year will be remembered; please do not list those names. All others are remembered by request only.
