PARISH ARTIFACT
Fr. Wenker's Chalice

On the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, a unique chalice was taken out of the sacristy vault to use at the evening Latin Mass. This "special occasion chalice"—as it's called by the parish clergy—has been at Saints Peter and Paul since 1899. The chalice was a gift given to Fr. August Wenker (pastor from 1878 to 1911) on his 25th anniversary with the Archdiocese of Chicago. (The Diocese of Joliet wasn't founded until 1948).

A Naperville Clarion (now the Naperville Sun) story published on May 31, 1899, describes—in elaborate detail—a banquet and reception that followed a 10 a.m. Solemn High Mass in honor of Fr. Wenker's Silver Jubilee.

"After the toasts, Rev. J. Schikowski, of Chicago, presented Father Wenker with a handsome chalice, the gift of the Reverend Clergy of the Archdiocese of Chicago," reads the story. "The chalice is made of 14-karat solid gold, beautifully engraved, ornamented with emeralds and rubies. The visiting clergy inform us that this chalice is one of the handsomest and most costly in use in the Archdiocese."

The next time you attend a special Mass at Saints Peter and Paul, be sure to pay attention to the chalice the priest uses—it may be over a century old!
