Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord
As we are now into the third week of reading from the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 6 (commonly referred to as the “Bread of Life Discourse”), I wanted to suggest a meditative reading of the responsorial psalm for this weekend.
Psalm 34 is one of my favorites; it is entitled “Thanksgiving to God Who delivers the Just”. We have only 9 verses of this 23 verse psalm; may I suggest that you take up your Bible and pray the entire psalm this week?
This is the section we will pray together as a response to the first reading of Mass this weekend (1 Kings 19:4-8) and in preparation for the Gospel reading
(John 6:41-51).
“I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the Lord;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.
Glorify the Lord with me,
let us together extol his name.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy
and your faces may not blush with shame.
When the afflicted man called out, the Lord heard,
and from all his distress he saved him.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is,
blessed the person who takes refuge in him.”
My prayer is that each day, each of us, will taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
