Aloha our beloved parish 'ohana,

I screwed up. I made a grave mistake in what I thought was the perfect plan. But instead, it was the worst plan imaginable. My mistake, relying on my own ego. I thought I knew what the outcome was to be, acceptance and popular friends. But instead it backfired with a vengeance. When I was a young girl of 10 years old, I tried to fit in with the “in crowd; the popular girls” so I became like them. I thought if I acted like I was better than another girl, I would be accepted and brought into their clique and life would be grand! Well, I never did fit in, they used me to hurt another’s feelings, and I still remember that girl's hurt to this day. I followed the crowd, and knowing it was wrong I did it anyway, to fit in.

And then I became the target because they didn’t need me anymore, I was the patsy. The bullying was relentless. If I had listened to the voice in my heart and my mother, so much pain could have been prevented for that sweet girl and myself. The guilt in my heart was overwhelming.

In the lectionary readings for this weekend, the Old Testament reading is taken from the Prophet Isaiah. It is the reading where Isaiah has a vision of entering the courts of the Almighty God. It is a vision of extreme dread and terror as Isaiah looked with fear as he gazed upon the Throne of God. He exclaimed “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King.” And then an angel brings a coal from the altar of purification and touches the lips of Isaiah and removes the guilt from his mouth and heart. God then thunders, “Who shall I send to proclaim the people to repent?” Isaiah said, “Here I am send me.”

I bring up this memory of my past to remind us that God has the power to remove our guilt, even if we have screwed up badly. All we need to do is repent, turn around, and let God touch us with his coal of forgiveness. And then answer the call when He asks “Who shall I send?”

He does not want us to fail, he wants us to live in the abundance of His Holiness.  I truly learned a valuable lesson at the tender age of 10, that I still remember today. When God needs a heart to teach his people and we feel our heart is not worthy, be assured it is. Just ask God to forgive and immediately the ‘coal’ from the altar of Love will purify your heart. There is nothing more rewarding than being a sent by God to bring others to that forgiveness. That is pure JOY!

Blessings as you Proclaim the Good News,

Linda +

We welcome back (Gary Washburn and members of the Honoka’a Dragon Jazz Band at St. James’ and live music at St. Columba’s! Mahalo to Joe Bollinger and Rick Fendel for chairing this year! All men of the parish, this is your time shine. The men set up, cook, and clean up! Traditionally, pancakes are associated with this day because making them was a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting of such delicacies during the season of the 40 days of Lent. We need volunteers for set-up, cooking, serving, and clean up. Please contact Rick    Fendel at St. James’ if you would like to volunteer:

office@stjameshawaii.org to volunteer at St. Columba’s.

Mahalo for your generous support of the recent 2025 Gratitude Campaign. Your pledges inform the Vestry and clergy of the funds available to care for our parish and the spiritual needs of parishioners. The ‘ohana-wide acceptance of our joint stewardship responsibility has been truly gratifying.

As of the end of January, 149 households have pledged $449,049. It's certainly possible that a few more pledges will be coming in and get us closer to the budgeted goal of $460,000. Our annual midyear campaign in June will certainly make up any difference. If you'd still like to pledge now, look for a pledge form in the back of the church or contact the office for other ways to make a pledge.

Once again, thank you so very much for standing together and supporting the ministries of the congregations of St James' Parish.

Kathleen Norris to Speak at St. James’ and St. Columba’s, February 22 & 23

Award-winning poet, writer, and best-selling author Kathleen Norris will come to our parish ‘ohana the weekend of February 22 & 23. On Saturday, February 22, in St. James’ Church from 9 – 10:30 AM, Kathleen will speak on her newest book. As Kathleen writes, “My newest book, A Whole Life in 12 Movies, is a labor of love. I’ve been a film nerd since I was a teenager in Honolulu, and on many Saturdays while my high school classmates were at the beach, I’d be at the Queen Theater in Kaimuki watching Ingmar Bergman films. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when my friend (and fellow film nerd) Gareth Higgins involved me in a new, weekly e-newsletter, Soul Telegram: Movies & Meaning, that I began writing about film. It’s been a joy ride. In the book we discuss some of the many meaningful and thoughtful films that that often don’t get the attention they deserve. We chose films that don’t have specific religious content, but can deepen our spirituality, as they have much to say about how we raise children, how we answer a vocational call, how we live our lives.

On Sunday, February 23, following the 9:30 AM service at St. Columba’s, Kathleen will lead a discussion around her book, Amazing GraceKathleen states, “I began writing Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith for myself, as I was returning to Christian worship as a young adult after having drifted away in my college years. I found many of the words I heard on Sunday mornings confusing and even intimidating, Even though I’d been raised in Methodist and UCC churches, the Christian vocabulary was confusing to me. So I began researching the words, and their history in the faith. Storytelling is my element, and I decided to tell stories about the words that might lead the reader to understand how they fit into my life, and the lives of other Christians. I’ve been glad to find that churches now use the book in “seeker” classes for new members. But my favorite response came from a Hindu man, a college professor in Boston, who said that the book had helped him understand the meaning of many words employed by his Christian friends.

There is no sign up to attend these gatherings. All are welcome. Please spread the word. You are welcome to purchase copies of her books to read before the gatherings, but it is not required. We have a limited supply available for purchase via our Parish Office.

Mahalo to all who are helping with this event, including Katie and Rick Fendel for providing accommodations.

Norris is the author of The New York Times bestsellers, The Cloister Walk, Acedia and Me: A Marriage, Monks and a Writer’s Life, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith and The Virgin of Bennington.  She also has published seven books of poetry. Some reviewers have compared her portrait of the world of the monastics in The Cloister Walk to the writings of Thomas Merton. Norris also appears on the DVD and companion book project titled Embracing a Life of Meaning: Kathleen Norris on Discovering What Matters. Kathleen Norris is a Benedictine Oblate of Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota. Widowed in 2003, she lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lenten Gatherings 2025:

“Remarkably Bright Creatures”

Join us for fellowship, good humor,

 and mutual self-discovery this spring.

Four gatherings, Starting March 10th

Mondays, 5:30 PM at St. Columba’s, Pa’auilo

Wednesdays, 5:30 PM at St James' Church, Waimea

During Lent the Church remembers the life of Christ as we sojourn with Jesus in scripture. We reflect on this penitential season with His own trials during forty days in the Wilderness and we are invited into a personal experience of Lent by reflecting on our individual life experiences and trials. This year you are invited to join the community in this observance as we share in the reading of “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt in spiritual pilgrimage with visiting Presbyterian pastor, the Rev. Joseph “Joey” Hester.

Through the alien, insightful, and often humorous observations of Marcellus, a Giant Pacific Octopus, we explore the trials of human experience in loss, rebellion, grief, and death with varied rich and complex human companions. And we discover healing, redemption and new life in the process. As Marcellus observes, humans for all their shortcomings are indeed "remarkably bright creatures."

Limited copies of the book are available for purchase via the Parish Office. The best option is to download the book to your tablet or E-reader. You do not have to read the book to attend, it is hoped you will.

Each evening will include prayer, food, and discussion.

While we hope you will join us in person, the Wednesday gathering at St. James’ will be offered online as well.

Note the same teaching will be offered on Mondays & Wednesdays. Come to either or both!

We had half of a Sunday School lesson this Sunday since the adults needed to leave to go to our Parish headquarters in Waimea right after church.

We focused on Jesus Going to Nazareth. Students made scrolls with sticks and pictures they drew of how to show love to someone different from us, since the lesson was about how Jesus taught the prophets to reach out to all people, including the poor, foreigners, and outcasts. Students did this while I read from Luke 4. They made their picture into a scroll which was how books were made in Jesus’ time. We also practiced the Lord’s Prayer.

Have a great week,

Vickie

From Sherry Dupaya

The teens are still working through the parables of Jesus. Each week they pick the parable we will read and discuss. I get a little nervous each week that they will pick a tough one but they have mastered each one so far with little assistance. They each share what they got out of the lesson and compare notes. I may be talking myself out of a position here but these teens are getting to be biblical experts. They could be teaching me one day soon.

From Tim

Chili con Carne

Following our retreat two weeks ago we’re still learning more about how to merge our ministries. We’re combining the Community Meals under one leadership team - it’s great to be connected and learning from each other.

We have a new oven! Thanks especially to Lynn Beittel and Matt Binder who led the charge in finding a new oven that would fit the cabinet. For months we’ve had issues with the old one - it was a dream this week to have both top and bottom working at once! Bobby was a boon this week - he helped Janice for hours on Wednesday afternoon browning 140 lbs of ground beef and turkey for the Chili.

We have a new program on campus, running next to the Meal. Kohala Food Hub are giving away produce bags every week from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. They have 59 local families signed up (there is now a waitlist), who will receive a full bag every Thursday for 23 weeks. We helped the Food Hub team serve cars driving through, on the church side, allowing an overtake lane for school parents and yogis. Principal Laurel Matsuda was very accommodating about clearing parking to allow the drive through, so close to her school pickup at 3.15.

Mel made a scrumptious Cowboy Salad tonight to go with the chili in the Pavilion. 5 pans were wiped out, and the vegetarians were delighted - they also had Rick’s veggie soup which was quite delicious. We served 254 people in the Pavilion, to a very mellow musical set from Patrice and Jeff. Goodfellow Bros were the solo sponsor, and they brought a full crew to help serve the buffet line. A lot of families tonight - we do have a lovely campus for kids.

Mel and I are now delivering to the Senior Housing behind Minit Stop, 32 meals in all. Now that we’ve done it a few weeks I’ve been entranced by a ritual I’ve observed. Two ladies in Block B take one meal each, then one walks over to the other’s place so they can eat together - what I think is so cool is - they take turns whose unit it is

Can We Talk?

So, let's talk about that amazing Annual Meeting!

Wow, was it just me or was everyone else feelin' the feels in the atmosphere that day?

Food was crazy good and talk about abundance! Then there was the fellowship.

Being in good company with good folks from every walk of life gathered together in one place with one order and one purpose.

The candidate selection was pretty tough. Every person had something special and unique to bring to the table. Wish we could have 'em all.

Every ministry report had a year filled with happenings, some of which was a first time hearing for me.

We've lost people either thru passing or new directions in life. All are missed.

But we've also gained. New parishioners, new volunteers and more guests.

How edifying it was to be with group of people who love serving our community in the name of our Lord. Almost like recharging for me. The reason for persevering and continuing on to the call of service.

Having some of my volunteers there being supportive shows their dedication and care of where their hard work of service goes.

Giving them wisdom, knowledge and understanding thru these meetings helps to deepen their commitment to service.

We are a beautiful community here to serve and give time to better the lives of others while we better ourselves.

I can only wonder if this is what it's like here at our church, Heaven must be a hundred million times more!

Until next week,

Rona Scull and The Thrift Store Volunteers

1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms".

Our ministry to the youngest in our midst is growing by leaps and bounds! We are in need of volunteers for After School Tutoring held every Wednesday at St. James’ from 1:15 - 3 PM. From Katie

This week’s Godly Play story (which had been scheduled months ago) just happened to be about Noah and the Flood, just after all the recent flash flooding around the Island. So the keiki really seemed to relate! They were wide-eyed as the Ark was held high up and rocking back and forth on the imaginary waves. They then learned that after the flood subsided, God sent a rainbow as a sign he will never send such a flood again. They commented on rainbows they had seen. We also took turns looking through a prism to see the colors of the rainbow. They were very attentive. Some of the keiki painted beautiful artwork with watercolors…they will be hung on the door to Godly Play. Some of the them chose to “work with the story” during response time. They had clearly listened carefully to the story, & told it by themselves perfectly! In fact, one of them suggested I should use some greenery next time to show the olive branch that the dove returned with, and gave me some green grass that had been tracked in to use next time I tell it. They absorb even the tiniest details, even when I wonder if they are listening. They are! They are an amazing group of keiki. And, who knows, one or more may become Godly Play teachers when they are older!

The Gathering Place Update

There are 222 supporters for the project and our total funds raised or pledged is now $3,765,000. Grants are still being submitted. The planning continues.

Because of the requirement to install a Waste Water Treatment Plant, which will increase the costs by about $150K, the timeline to submit plans to the County have been set back until mid March. This would also affect breaking ground for the project until September or early October.

Words of Wisdom

Children

Jesus commends a child’s blissful unconcern with the status signaling of the world, and a child’s dependency on circumstances utterly beyond her control. Jesus teaches a humility and an empathy that has its priorities right, which leads to more freedom and more joy.
