Aloha our beloved parish 'ohana,
I am hoping you all have had a chance to read the email sent out earlier this week regarding our entering into escrow on the Chock property next door to St. James'. Oh my, what a blessing. We are being given another beautiful opportunity to dream and hope about the ways we can expand our sharing of God's grace and mercy through our ministries and partnerships. It has been an extra-full couple of weeks for several of you who have been working so hard behind the scenes to help make this possible. Mahalo to each of you. There is much more ahead of us, and we will work to ensure our parish 'ohana is kept informed of the progress. This could certainly make our Parish Annual Meeting on January 23 feel even more joyful!
This sense of possibility feels especially fitting as we celebrate Thanksgiving and prepare to enter the season of Advent. We find ourselves standing at a beautiful threshold: gratitude for all that God has done, and hope for all that God is yet to do.
Yesterday, many of us gathered in the Pavilion for our parish Thanksgiving meal – hundreds of plates of food shared, countless conversations enjoyed, and a spirit of joy and generosity that felt like a foretaste of the Kingdom. We prayed the Thanksgiving prayers written years ago by our parishioner Fr. Walt Detwiller, of blessed memory. Walt had a way of saying things that kept us honest. His prayers invited us to ask God not to bless a picture-perfect holiday, but to bless the real Thanksgiving: the one made of family dynamics, imperfect plans, unexpected grace, and the holy messiness of life.
That is Eucharist. And that is who we are.
Our central act of worship is, quite literally, thanksgiving – the Eucharist. But it is not just gratitude for the good parts of life. It is thanksgiving made holy because we bring the whole of ourselves to God: the joys and the sorrows, the hopes and fears, the beauty and the brokenness. And God receives it, blesses it, and gives it back to us as grace.
As we now turn toward the beginning of a new Church year and light the first candle on our Advent wreath, we carry this spirit of gratitude with us. Advent begins not with tinsel and carols, but with a quiet invitation: "Keep awake." The Gospel for this Sunday (Matthew 24:36–44) reminds us that Christ's coming is like the days of Noah – life going on as usual until the flood came, two people working side by side when one is taken and one is left. Jesus asks us to be people who notice God in the ordinary rhythms of life – not through predictions or anxieties about the future, but in the everyday places where Christ is already arriving: at the table, in the faces of neighbors, in the needs of the community, in moments of forgiveness, generosity, and courage.
This, too, is thanksgiving:
a grateful heart is an awake heart.
We can move through life on autopilot, numbed by hurry or worry, or we can carry gratitude forward as a way of staying awake to grace. Advent invites us to choose attentiveness, to choose trust, to choose presence.
Our entering into escrow on the Chock property is yet another example of how you choose to be awake to the movement of the Holy Spirit – how to live with gratitude and step courageously forward once again in faith.
You are witnessing to the truth that a thankful spirit keeps us open to the small, surprising ways Christ comes among us each day.
I give thanks for each of you – for your faithfulness, your kindness, your generosity, and the countless ways you help one another carry both the blessings and the burdens of life. As we enter this new year of grace, may gratitude and watchfulness shape our steps.
May we look for Christ's coming not only in Bethlehem, but in every ordinary place where love is trying to be born.
With deep thanksgiving for our parish 'ohana, and with great hope for the year ahead,
In Christ's aloha,

Advent Reflection with Carl McColman:
Read the Bible Like a Mystic
A three-week journey into the heart of sacred scripture.
This Advent, you’re invited to slow down and approach the Bible in a new way: not as something to master, but as a sacred conversation to enter with your heart wide open. Whether you’re brand new to reading the Bible or have read it for years, join us for this gentle, reflective series with beloved author and teacher Carl McColman. Drawing from his newest book, Reading the Bible Like a Mystic, Carl invites us to encounter the Bible in the spirit of wonder and prayerful contemplation that allows us to find the hidden wisdom of God’s Spirit in these ancient writings. To read the Bible “like a mystic” means reading it not as a rulebook or legal code, but as a doorway into divine mystery—a sacred conversation between God and the human heart.
Each week, we’ll reflect on key Advent themes—hope and peace, joy and love, waiting and incarnation—and explore how a contemplative, Spirit-led reading of scripture can deepen our awareness of God’s presence in our lives. Especially in a season so often hurried and distracted, this is an opportunity to slow down, listen more deeply, and open ourselves to the quiet wonder of the Word made flesh.
When & Where
-
Mondays, 5 – 7PM at St. Columba’s, Pa’auilo
-
Wednesdays, 5:30 – 7:30 PM at St. James’. (note the Wednesday gatherings will be livestreamed on the parish website for those unable to attend in person).
Each week’s teaching is the same at both locations, so simply choose the evening that best fits your schedule.
Both gatherings will begin with a light Advent potluck supper and a time of prayer.
Reading Carl’s book, Reading the Bible Like a Mystic is encouraged, but not required. Copies are available via our parish office. You are also welcome to download a digital or audio copy via Amazon.
Come join us for this gentle, three-week journey into the heart of Scripture—and discover how even the busiest season can become an invitation to hope, peace, joy, and love.

He is known for his accessible and enthusiastic presentations of topics related to Christian spirituality, including guidance in practices like Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, and other spiritual practices, and interpretations of the teachings of great mystics and saints from the past for our time (some of the figures Carl loves to speak on include Thomas Merton, Caryll Houselander, Evelyn Underhill, CS Lewis, Pauli Murray, Kenneth Leech, Julian of Norwich, and Teresa of Ávila).

Special Callout to Community Meal Volunteers and Friends of the Meal
The Waimea Community Meal has been chosen as the beneficiary of the 65th Annual Waimea Christmas Parade. We have the special opportunity of running this year’s Bucket Brigade, collecting donations from the crowd to support the Meal. The Parade is on Saturday, December 6th.
The Bucket Brigade operates just before the Parade starts, from 5pm to 6pm. WE NEED BUCKET BRIGADERS! You will pick up buckets from St. James between 3:30 PM and 4 PM. You will be working in pairs or larger groups, wearing Meal aprons, walking through the crowd, taking your time, making eye contact, and announcing what you are doing. Use the entire hour until 6 PM to collect donations. Go deep in the crowd. Have fun. Talk story. Extend aloha and Christmas wishes, and gratitude!
Our golf cart and truck will drive near the beginning of the Parade to pick up the buckets and aprons. Afterward, you are free to enjoy the Parade! If you need a ride back to St. James’, we will provide it if we can.
Please reach out to Tim Bostock at (808) 382-3290 or timbostock808@gmail.com if you would like to help. Or sign up with Sharon or Janice via the Parish Office.

From our Youth Pastor, Josh Anthony
St James'
Monday evening we made custom Pizza in the church with the youth group. Sharon from the food ministry donated 5 pizzas so all we had to do was get the extra ingredients to make them personalized. That combined with the singing led by John Stover made for an outrageously fun evening in the church. Thank you to the food ministry staff for having the kitchen available for us to use the kids were shocked at how set up it isand were grateful for the its use. Thank you as well to the person who donated the little red peppers that were left over from Sunday service. They were the ultimate ingredient to add to the pizzas. Monday December 1 will be our next meeting, same place, in the Spencer Building.
The youth group is looking for 2 things if anyone has either they aren’t using:
- A guitar for the youth music.
- A small sewing machine for one of the youth who has volunteered to hem the new curtains in the Spencer building and make new pillow cushions.
Sunday teen service continues every Sunday which seems to make the youth that attend happy because it is more interactive for them. The service was designed wit them in mind and continues to grow with their needs. 9:30-!0:30 Sundays in the back of the spencer building. Same time as the main Sunday service and we come together at the end for fellowship with the entire 9:30 congregation.
Teen Tech will be back on site December 7, 10:30-Noon.
| | |
This week at Sunday service at St Columba’s we worked in the series of advent plays that the youth will out in for the congregation. Great job Sherry getting all of the youth involved. We skipped last week Afterschool Social Hour because of the Thanksgiving break but we’ll continue on December 3.
We’re also starting the salad meal series at St Columba’s this week at Sunday service. Thank you to Andrea for the inspiration of the fresh foods into our youth and for supplying the greens and sauces. Bring your normal potluck dish share and a salad ingredient to add to all the others that will accompany the salad from Andrea.

Walking Together: My Role in the EfM Community
Shannon Whittaker | EfM Participant, Year 1, Episcopal Diocese of Long Island
My first year in the Education for Ministry (EfM) program has been a transformative journey. As both a participant and a co-mentor, I have experienced profound personal and spiritual growth. EfM, with its rich curriculum and collaborative learning environment, aims to deepen theological understanding and equip participants for different forms of ministry. Entering this dual role, I was both excited and apprehensive, unsure of how I would balance learning and mentoring...
| | | | |
Note that all texts for EfM have been changed and updated, and that prior EfM graduates are now welcome to dip into the program and repeat any year of their choice, and/or take the new overview curriculum called 'Wide Angle' that has a bit of everything in it.
Mandy has indicated that if there is enough interest (at least 6 people) that she will consider an 'in person' group as well as her ZOOM based group. Please get in touch with her if you are interested, and also remember that scholarships are possible.

From Michael Thompson
For the last Sunday before Advent, the keiki completed their study of Psalms 23 with the final verse, containing God's promises of goodness, unfailing love and eternal life. They learned that like their own shadows, God is always with us. The account in the Bible about Saul changing from someone who tried to put Christians in jail to someone who tried to get everyone to believe in Jesus shows how Jesus pursues each of us because He loves us and wants to be with us every day.
We each said a prayer to thank Jesus for being with us in a certain place or while doing a certain thing. In thinking about the meaning of eternal or forever, we tried to think of things that have no beginning or end, such as a circle. Each of the keiki made a Mobius strip, changing a strip of paper with two sides to a strip having only one side. We discussed how God promises each of us eternal life by believing in Jesus and how Jesus compared himself to living water which makes the thirst in our souls go away.

We're Grateful For...
Just love this week. Love it when our ministry is beyond Thrift Store business.
We just want to say thank you for a great year!
We are grateful for the exceptional donations we have received from our donors who provided not only for the store's merchandise, but for the people we were able to provide for beyond our boundaries.
We are grateful to our customers who continuously support our causes.
We are grateful to the generous folks who have given monetary donations thru our store in honor of the services of our volunteers.
We are grateful to the ministries who have included our store in their missions to provide and help others.
We are grateful for Paula who faithfully takes our donations to the animal services.
We are grateful for all the beautiful ways God has used us and the testimonies we get to share thru the newsletter that Donna so graciously helps us to put into words.
We are grateful for the people we have met thru our ministry. Those special people whose hearts are for others.
We are grateful for the volunteers that serve in all ministries giving up their time and efforts for others.
We are grateful to our church who supports our missions and allows us to be giving and generous.
And mostly, we are grateful to our Lord Jesus, without Him, none of this gratitude would be experienced.
Here's to being grateful to all things!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the
Thrift Store!
Until next week,
Rona S, Bri and The Thrift Store Volunteers
Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus".

From Lynn Beittel
A Bountiful Thanksgiving Dinner
Silly me, I was worried that our Thanksgiving luncheon might be light on food. The opposite was true. Around 300 diners and volunteers showed up on a warm Waimea day to feast on tender, moist and delicious turkey cooked in Mana Christian Ohana’s imu, and a dazzling array of side dishes provided by the kitchen staff and church and Community Meal volunteers. These dishes included stuffing, mashed potatoes, rice, gravy, green salads, pasta salads, mac salads, potato salads, cranberry sauce, rolls and many delicious desserts including a stack of Costco pumpkin pies. Homemade limeade and juices rounded out the feast.
I arrived around 10:45 to find the pavilion was buzzing with volunteers, many of whom were not “regulars” on the Meal. They were cutting and bagging bread, arranging the free produce table, setting up a special area for self-serve desserts, and many other tasks. It was chaos, but controlled chaos. Meal coordinator Sharon quietly told me that “This is my first rodeo” meaning this was the first time she had overseen the Thanksgiving lunch. Regardless, she looked amazingly calm while scores of volunteers asked her for instructions.
Then the servers arrived, put on aprons, washed and gloved their hands and took their stations as a long line of eager diners formed outside. Father David gathered everyone around for a short service, Jeanne Cooper contributed and Rona Lee performed with her ukelele. Then the Thanksgiving feast began. Soon diners packed the pavilion or ate outside.
A lot of people worked hard to make this meal a success, but our staff members Janice (Mei Ling) and Sharon, were truly our Thanksgiving Heroes! On Wednesday night they and others drove four trucks and SUVs to Costco to pick up a lot of food that Costco needed to move out before it closed for the holiday. Then the vehicles returned to Saint James' and the food was stored or given away to other food programs. Our fearless leaders didn’t get home until midnight. On Thanksgiving morning starting at 7 AM, imu turkeys needed to be picked up, turkey needed shredding, the pavilion needed to be set up and volunteers needed directing.
After the Meal as a group of us were cleaning up, Frankie blasted the Hallelujah Chorus over the speakers and we sang along at the top of our lungs, grateful that the Thanksgiving Meal was a success, and that our work was almost done.
A quick reminder, Christmas and New Year’s Day both fall on Thursday this year, and we will be taking those two Thursdays off.
Have a good week, be kind to others, and come back and join us for December 6th’s Community Meal.

We just received a $25,000 County grant through the Hawaii Food Basket, towards the cost of the walk-in chiller and freezer units. This grant recognizes the need for better storage of donated produce throughout the island, and the Gathering Place is eagerly anticipated by all the food outreach groups in North Hawaii.
Our capital campaign now stands at $5,028,000 from 294 donors. Written updates to all donors have gone out this week - many thanks, Colleen, Terri and Katie!
Our engineers and Paul Donoho are working through the building department's permit comments. The permit final reviews should all be passed in the next few weeks, then the permit will be “issued” when the General Contractor pays for it. We look forward to selecting the GC in the first half of December.
We are so grateful this Thanksgiving, for our many supporters and donors, committee volunteers, and most of all, for your prayers!
With much aloha

Calling all high school youth! Register by December 1!
EYE with Aloha: Talk Story Pilgrimage 2026
In light of the postponement of the Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) of The Episcopal Church from Summer 2026 to Summer 2028, we are excited to announce that the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi will host an upcoming event for youth of incoming grades 9-12 from the 19 dioceses within Province VIII (essentially the Western USA plus Alaska, Hawaiʻi, Guam, Saipan, and Taiwan).
The theme is "EYE with Aloha: Talk Story Pilgrimage 2026" that will take place in and around the Cathedral of St. Andrew, July 28-31, 2026. The cost is only $120 for three days which covers food, lodging, transportation, and fees. Organizers are asking for all "pilgrims" and chaperones to register by December 1 for planning purposes. Payment will be due at a later date.
All churches should have received an email from the Rev. David "Kawika" Jackson, the Diocesan Coordinator for Youth Ministry, with details. Remember, scholarships are available and there is a travel fund for neighbor island youth. If you have any questions, please email Jackson.

Gratitude
This holiday season, if you’re finding fault in another, holding onto hurt, or wanting to throw someone out, consider the question: What have you received? Act from your gratitude and experiences of mercy, forgiveness, and love. Abiding with one another helps, heals, and preserves the whole body.
