Aloha our beloved Parish 'Ohana,

When was the last time you had a good laugh? A good belly laugh is one of the best feelings in the world. Maybe you’ve been in an elevator or in church(!) and something funny catches your attention and that of others' -- and ALL of you start laughing together. Laughter has a way of bridging differences, releasing tension, and bringing people together. I am one blessed priest because I get to serve with others with whom I often find myself in a fit of laughter.

Episcopal priest and monk, Br. James Koester, asks, “Who do you laugh with? That’s the person in whom you will begin to see the face of Jesus, who calls you his friend. It is in the face of the One who calls you friend that you will discover the truth of what this means: no one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. And it all begins, I think, with laughter.”

Most of us have heard someone say, when facing a difficult situation, “Well, it is either laugh or cry.” For us Christians, our laughing in a hard moment has something to do with what Jesus once said: “I have come so that my joy may be in you.” (John 15:11) Joy is different than happiness. Happiness comes and goes, but Christian joy abides. It comes from knowing that the worst of times will not last forever. As we come to this day of Pentecost and celebrate the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, the joke is on the Devil, for God’s love wins out and abides with us even until the end of time.

G. K. Chesterton said, “If you can’t laugh in heaven, I don’t want to go there.” Churches where there is no laughter are places that have lost their vision of the Kingdom of God — they have lost their joy. Thankfully this is not the case in our parish!

As one newcomer said to me, with tears in their eyes, “I don’t think I have every worshipped in a place where I have felt such joy.”

With gratitude for the laughter,

David

MORE New Members Welcomed!

We celebrate that Jeff & Miriam Wilson gave us the blessing of welcoming them as official members of our parish ʻohana this past weekend at our congregation in Pa'auilo!

In addition the eight new members welcomed the weekend of May 6 & 7, a hearty welcome was extended to new members Jeff and Miriam Wilson and their adorable pug Effie. what a joy it is to welcome Jeff & Miriam (and Effie!) as official members of not only St. Columbaʻs, but our whole parish ʻohana!

When we are baptized, a promise is given: That you will seek to find a place where you will “continue in the Apostle’s teaching, in the breaking of bread, in the prayers, and fellowship.” Some of us knew immediately that this was the place that we are called to make our church home. For others of us, this is something we learned over time. It was simply where our feet kept leading us. For others, our parish is your secondary spiritual home, as you join us when you are on island. In this case, you are doubly blessed! Either way, you are our sisters and brothers, and we give thanks that we are given the blessing of celebrating that we are part of the same Hawai'i Island parish ‘ohana. The next Welcome Weekend is yet to be set. However, speak to any of the clergy about becoming a member of our parish.

Wear RED to Worship

It is a fun tradition to wear red to worship on the weekend of Pentecost (this weekend). Red is the color of fire and represents the power of God. On the day of Pentecost we remember the promised gift of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the disciples.

Going forth to Love & Serve

This week we learned about The Great Commission. As we discussed the lesson everyone worked together to make hygiene kits for the Salvation Army. Each kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, and soap. The Salvation Army in Honoka'a has an open shower twice a week for the homeless in Honoka'a.

Gary Todd, who leads the ministry for the Salvation Army, visited St Columba's today for our services and was able to take the kits back with him to distribute them.

We sang songs and Saige Dupaya read scripture during services today as well. It was a full day of worship in heart and in our actions.

Susan Acacio told the story of the Holy Bible to our Keiki on Sunday. They really enjoyed the part where they could see our bible stories around the room in the beautiful materials that are available. Laura Williams was the door person and also helped the keiki make bookmarks for their bibles. They were each given their very own action bible.

This coming Sunday we will be telling the story of Pentecost. Laura Williams is the storyteller.

Keiki Bible Donations Needed

Last Sunday in Godly Play our keiki learned about the Bible. Here is Dayna’s son, Imi Na’auao (which means “seeker of knowledge”), with his new Action Bible presented by our Youth Ministries Coordinator, Susan Acacio. We need more bibles to give out to our keiki. Would you donate toward the purchase of them? Contact Susan Acacio, if you will do so.

We have t-shirts from the Diocese to use as a fundraiser for our Youth going to EYE23.

We have limited sizes and colors. See Susan Acacio after the 7:30 or 9:30 service. We have teal, purple, grey, and red shirts. Available for donation only as a fundraiser for the Episcopal Youth Event in Maryland.

Blessings, Susan Acacio

The Mennonite Creation Care Network is one of my favorite denominational bodies and is not limited to a Mennonite audience. Among many highlights are climate-themed retreats for pastors, suggestions to help churches re-discover connections to local environments, tips for responsible living at home or in churches, and a great small group curriculum.

Hint of the Week

This month we have focused on caring for our island home by tips to reduce using single use plastics. This is critical for our state with almost no plastic recycling resources (HI 5 bottles only, nothing else!) and limited landfills.

In summary, one of the greatest overall ways to reduce plastic use is conscientious consumerism.

Try asking yourself with each purchase- "Is this a thing/brand/package Earth friendly? Can I reuse/recycle this container? Could I buy an alternative product that's more sustainable?

Having awareness of the impact of our everyday purchasing is a huge step in meaningful efforts to care the gift of God's creation.

MAHALO TO OUR SPONSORS:

Mel Holt & Tim Bostock

(Happy Birthday, Mel)

From Tim & Jaisy

It feels great to be back! Tonight we resumed the weekly dine-in Community Meal in the Pavilion. We served 78 people, 31 of which were keiki, including the youth from the Kawaihae Canoe Club; the beautiful part about it was feeding the souls of people who needed to be with one another, to be in fellowship with one another.

We enjoyed the sounds of musician Scott Buchholz alongside produce bags filled with cucumbers, tomatoes, and kale from our local farmers; we enjoyed a delicious meal of donated tri-tip steak

with lentil soup, baked beans, and rice, topped off with homemade desserts.

We are so grateful to our sponsors, Jeff and Merrie Jo Snow and Tim Bostock and Mel Holt (Happy Birthday Mel!). The smiles say it all; it is great to be back!

The drive-through was truncated to half an hour, although we extended about 15 minutes since it’s the first week with these new times.  We served 358 folk  before we closed, and deliveries were significantly down this week to 322.  So 758 Meals served in all.  And a very hearty meal it was!  Big thanks to Costco for donating the tri-tip, and Massive Mahalos to all the volunteers who came together to make the new ‘3-in-1’ operation a success.

All went smoothly in the kitchen with the packing crew. We were done with packing and cleaning up by 5:30 PM and the crew was thrilled. New faces volunteering in the pavilion meant swift clean up there too – and what joy to see the

kids playing outside again as the Waimea evening caresses us.  God is Good.

See you next Thursday from 4:30-5 drive-through and 5-6 dine-in!

With aloha

The Gift of Hospitality

After Pentecost the women and men who believed in Jesus gathered to pray together, share the Lord’s Supper, listen to the apostles’ teaching, and share food and drink with each other. Jesus’s actions showed us how important it is to share food and drink with others, especially with people we do not know. Every growing congregation knows how important this is. I am so glad we pattern ourselves after these early Christians. Our time of fellowship and hospitality after worship brings vitality to our congregation. Let us give thanks to those folks who prepare, purchase, bring and serve the goodies and the beverages that make our time together so special. This time of hospitality provides a place to share our stories and open our lives to the blessing and surprises of God’s Holy Spirit. The generosity of those who sign up for this ministry enriches the hospitality of our church. Mahalo!

SUNDAY SERVICE

St. Columba's was privileged to welcome Envoy Gary Todd from The Salvation Army in Honoka'a to this past Sunday's service.

It was a delight to have him with us and he gave a wonderful and informative talk after the service. For those of us who do not know what an Envoy is, Gary explained his duties as being a non-commissioned officer who works for The Salvation Army in a ministry position.

He is a minister of Jesus Christ helping those in need through the means of The Salvation Army. St. Columba's has been, and will continue to be, a supporter of The Salvation Army by bell-ringing at Christmas and in other means as needed. So, as a reminder, when those bells ring at Christmas, give generously as every cent collected goes to helping the needy of the Big Island. Mahalo nui Envoy Gary Todd for your amazing ministry.

Mahalo to Vickie Wangberg and Miriam Wilson for offering their beautiful voices by singing a duet for communion. It was absolutely lovely. They also led worship music for The Ministry of the Word. Mahalo nui Vickie and Miriam!

Due to St. Columba's Renovation for Mission and Outreach, the congregation is worshiping off site at St. Joseph Parish Hall across the street. It is a lovely space, and we are extremely thankful that St. Joseph is willing to share it with us.

Thrift Sale Coming Soon!

Watch this space for information regarding our famous St. Columba's Thrift Sale. We have been given permission to have a Thrift Sale at St. Joseph's Hall as our new 'digs' are being constructed! Thank you, Fr. Jun, for your generosity! Time and date to be announced in next week's newsletter!!

May Fest King!

Akaka'i Adam's, son of Baba and Ruby Adams was crowned King of Pa'auilo School's May Fest. He is graduating from ninth grade and will attend Honoka'a High School in the fall.

Congratulations Alaka'i!

St. Columba's "after Easter study" will be Season 3 of The Chosen. We will meet every Wednesday night with pupu's at 5pm and the study will begin at 5:30 to 7pm. Everyone is welcome. We have great pupu's and even greater discussions! Due to the renovation, we will be meeting at St. Joseph's Parish Hall, across the street from St. Columba's.

Update on the “Renovations for Mission & Outreach” at St. Columba’s

From parishioner Brian Burke, Project Manager

05-25-2023

Aloha all Beloved Brothers and Sisters; Past, Present and Future -

Progress on the St. Columba’s alterations met with setbacks during the last 8 days.

The framing crew decided to do something else but I’m not sure what or where. Jason Dearinger, the Tinguely Project Manager, scrambled heroically and a new crew will start work this Saturday and work everyday until they finish the Multi-Purpose building frame.

The Plumber, Bobby (in one of the pictures) is not a whiner (actually, none of those working here have whined) but materials suppliers have not been able to fill their orders consistently and Bobby must search much more than usual to find adequate components to fashion solutions as he races to complete an area so the Electrician can work at the kitchen zone again next week. I’m confident Bobby and Darryl will make it happen.

All on the building team know these are more challenging times than normal for obtaining materials and workers. We’re all trying to stay numerous steps ahead to keep things rolling along as smoothly as possible. We’ll continue doing just that.

Next week I expect to send you a more positive progress report and pictures with welcome results.

Pictures attached show:

·      Bobby fitting a tight space for part of the new Kitchen drainage system, and

·      Roof trusses for the Multi-Purpose Room that were delivered exactly when promised….but no framers around to put up walls until Saturday, May 27th.

May our Lord Jesus bless you and all you love with His incomparable peace and joy – regardless of the temporary challenges,

Brian Burke

As you know, Typhoon Mawar unleashed winds of over 145 miles an hour and torrential rain on the island of Guam. I have been in touch with the Reverend Irene Maliaman, a priest of the Diocese of Hawaiʻi who serves as the Archdeacon of the Episcopal Church in Micronesia, the Vicar of The Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine, and the only active Episcopal Priest currently residing full-time on Guam.

St. John’s Church suffered blown out glass doors and some flooding, but it appears there is no major damage. Families were sheltering in the Church’s office and in the Vicarage throughout the storm. I have not received a report yet on St. John’s School.

Guam takes typhoons very seriously and typically hunker down in reinforced concrete structures. Initial early news reports from the government of Guam suggest only moderate damage such as flooding, fallen debris and downed power lines. I’m awaiting more details as the evaluation continues. Folk will need help with cleanup.

How can you help?

Churches can take special collection on Sunday, May 28, to help the Episcopal Church in Micronesia with clean up and to help others impacted by the storm. Individuals can also make donations. Send all donations to:

Words of Wisdom

YES

God’s invitation to us is to say “yes” to life, to the terms of life we’ve been given. The changing terms. Some days they are terrific terms; some days they are tough terms. Jesus says, “Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

"The night is dark. Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives rest in you. The night is quiet. Let the quietness of God’s peace enfold us, all dear to us, and all who have no peace."
