Aloha Our Beloved Parish 'Ohana,

In Matthew’s Gospel assigned for this weekend, in an effort to entrap Jesus, the Pharisees ask him if it is lawful to pay taxes to the emperor. Jesus responds by telling them to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. Jesus avoids the trap by showing that they/we have a dual citizenship. Our citizenship in this country requires that we pay money for the services and benefits we receive. However, our citizenship in the Kingdom of God requires us to pledge to God our primary commitment and obedience. Why? Because at our baptism we are marked, stamped, as Christ’s own. We may live in the kingdom of this world, but as Christians, we are members of the Kingdom of God. In fact, every time we say the Lord’s prayer we declare ourselves politically to be aligned with God’s Kingdom first above all others. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done.

Like those who came before us, we are living in tempestuous times. Times of great anxiety, fear, uncertainty. However, we can choose how we respond. We can choose to remember that, as children of God, marked/stamped as Christ’s own, we are called to be different by stepping out of our comfort zones in order to give back to God what is God’s in the first place: our time, our talent, and our treasure, remembering that all that we are and all that we have comes from God alone.

It is not easy to live as a Christian in the complexity and ambiguity of today’s world, because we are called not to conform, but to transform. We can do our small part to transform, by honoring Christ Jesus, not only with our lips, but as we live and share God’s Aloha in our daily lives through our love, affection, peace, compassion, with mercy, kindness, unity, and respect.

At Baptism, we were sealed and marked/stamped as Christ’s own forever. May our St.James’`Ohana continue to share the light and love of God’s Aloha wherever we are.

Blessings and love,

Marnie +

Living God’s Aloha: Our 2027 Gratitude Campaign

This weekend we launch our 2027 Gratitude Campaign! You'll find a pledge card in every worship bulletin, inviting you

to prayerfully consider your financial commitment to the life and ministry of our parish in the coming year.

Why do we ask people to make a pledge? On a practical level, pledges help us plan responsibly. They give our Vestry

a clearer picture of the financial resources we can expect in 2027, allowing us to prepare a budget, pay our bills, support

our staff, and plan for the ministries God has entrusted to us. In this way, pledging helps us be good stewards of what we

have been given.

But pledging is about much more than balancing a budget. It is about discipleship. Our giving is one way we respond

to the extraordinary generosity of God, who has given us everything, even his own Son, who gave his life for us. We

don't give to earn God's love. We give because we have already received it. Our generosity is an expression of gratitude, an act of faith, and a commitment to helping build God's kingdom and share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

This coming year brings some particular financial realities. With rising costs and fewer grant funds available, our

beloved Community Meal Ministries will need greater support from our parish's operating budget. We are currently

projecting an approximately $80,000 budget shortfall for 2027, with $60,000 of that needed to help sustain our

Community Meal Ministries. These meals are such a vital expression of God's aloha, feeding our neighbors, building

relationships, and evangelism with our hands and hearts.

We share these numbers not to cause alarm, but to be transparent about the needs before us. With new households

joining in supporting what God is doing here, and those who are able prayerfully considering an increase in their

pledges, we are hopeful that together we can close this gap.

Every pledge, whatever its size, matters. As we look toward 2027 and a new chapter in our parish's life, we invite

everyone to prayerfully consider making a pledge. If you've pledged before, mahalo! We hope you'll renew your

commitment. If you've never pledged, perhaps this is the year to begin.

Together, with grateful hearts, we can continue living God's aloha by welcoming one another as Christ, building God’s beloved community, and serving others.

Everyone is asked to return the pledge card to the Parish Office or place in the offering plate by November 14.

Mahalo for your generosity and faithfulness!

St.Columba's Youth

Straight back from fall break the youth at After School Social Hour were blessed with Domino's pizza brought by Sherry Dupaya. Thank you Sherry! You continue to be a shining light for that program. They also had a pickled cucumber salad (thank you Teresita) mac salad and cookies.

Like many other schools the kids in Pa'auilo have jumped on the rising popularity of that 'Swinging ball on a string game" where the kids try to land the ball on the wooden handle after doing a trick with it along the way(see pictures).

St James' is offering a free one of those "swing ball games" to the first two youth who can answer the following questions:

1. The official name of the game/toy(starts with a K)

2. Its origin of creation(where did it come from)

3. Who brought it to the United States first and when?

All 3 questions must be correct to win. The competition is on!!! Send your answers to to Josh at youthpastor@stjameshawaii.org.

Trunk or Treat at St. James’!

Friday, October 30 • 3–4:30 PM

Calling all keiki, families, and parish ʻohana!

Join us for an afternoon of Halloween fun at St. James’! Our annual Trunk or Treat will take place on the front church lawn beside the Parish Office. Construction on the Gathering Place will be pau for the day, so we'll have a quiet, secure space for everyone to enjoy.

We need your help to make it a fun afternoon! Bring your car or truck, some candy to share, and, if you're willing, come in costume! Better yet, decorate your trunk or the back of your truck. The more creative, the better! We'll be spreading the word to our Waimea schools and inviting families from throughout our community.

Visitor parking on the front church grass, in the area normally used by those attending church and visiting our Thrift Store Ministry.

And what does Halloween have to do with our Christian faith?

Halloween comes from All Hallows' Eve, the evening before All Saints' Day on November 1. On All Saints' Day, we remember that we belong to the great communion of saints, all God's people, especially remembering those who have gone before us into the fullness of God's Kingdom.

There's something wonderfully playful about dressing up as ghosts, goblins, and all sorts of scary creatures. We can laugh at the darkness because we know it doesn't have the last word! As we sing in a favorite hymn, “In Him there is no darkness at all.” The light of Christ shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

What a wonderful message to share with our keiki: We need not be afraid, for God's light and love are stronger than anything that frightens us.

So come join the fun, share some aloha, and help us offer a joyful witness to our faith and our community!

A big mahalo to our Youth Pastor, Josh Anthony, for organizing this year's event! Please contact Josh for any help or information: YouthPastor@StJamesHawaii.org

Did you know that volunteering is good for you?

"When you give your time to help others, your brain releases "feel good" chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin. These natural compounds:

  • Create feelings of joy and satisfaction.
  • Lower stress hormones like cortisol.
  • Guard against depression.

There are also significant physical benefits. For example, researchers at The University of Michigan discovered that at people who selflessly donate their time live longer than those who don't."

Help out and live longer too! Here are some opportunites:

Help Support Our St. James’ 7:30 and 9:30 AM Coffee Hour

Our St. James’ 9:30 AM Coffee Hour is a wonderful time of fellowship, an opportunity to connect, welcome newcomers, and simply enjoy being together as a community. We need of a few more folks to help support this ministry. There are a couple of easy ways to participate: Bringing a simple food item to share. Helping with set-up or clean-up. Often, we are so thankful to be able to serve leftovers from our Thursday Community Meal, but when those are not available, we rely on the generosity of our parish ‘ohana. If you’d be willing to help in any way, whether occasionally or more regularly, it would be a great blessing and help spread the responsibility more evenly. Connect with Melanie Rufo, Jada Rufo, Terri Greenwell, or Frankie Pang after the service. They will welcome your help with open arms! If you don’t know who they are, our clergy will be glad to make an introduction. Mahalo for helping us continue to build community in this simple and meaningful way.

Godly Play - At least three additional Godly Play volunteers are needed - there will be a training offered soon. If this ministry calls to you, please contact Laura Williams through the church office.

West Campus (formerly Chock Property) - There are still lots of clean up and clearing projects to be done! If you are willing and able, gather a group of friends or family members and take on a clearing, cleaning or painting task. Contact Frankie our Sexton through the office for some ideas about what needs to be done!

Teach the Teens to Cook - help to prepare our young people to live on their own by sharing a favorite simple recipe. Contact Josh our Youth Pastor

St. Columba's After School Social Hour - Volunteers are always welcome! Make a treat, teach a craft, play a game or just hang out - Contact Josh our Youth Pastor

Altar Guild - floral arranging skills, while welcome, are not required. There are many other tasks that are part of the Altar Guild ministry! Contact Terri Greenwell through the church office to find out more about this vital 'behind the scenes' ministry! Perfect for the introverts in the crowd who still feel called to participate.

Waimea Community Meal - Bakers - DESSERTS NEEDED-We can always use more sweets! Please drop off desserts! We welcome cookies cakes, pies, brownies, etc. Please drop off on Thursday. Mahalo!

On Sunday, we had one keiki in Godly Play, my granddaughter, LIllyanna. Melanie was the door person, and she and LIllyanna heard the Godly Play story The Book of Psalms.

We learned that the psalms are songs that lost their tunes. Some were written by King David. The words of the psalms help us to pray, give thanks to God, tell God our feelings and to say we are sorry. "They ask God to come close and show us the way”.

There are 150 psalms in the book of Psalms. They don’t have names so people know them by how they begin. Lillyanna picked out the psalm she wanted to hear and wonder about, and then she and Melanie gathered things in the room that would help us to make a kind of picture of the psalm.

She chose Psalm 18:1-3.

"I love you, O Lord, my strength."

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

"I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised,, so I shall be saved from my enemies.”

We then wrote down the words to each our favorite psalms to take home with us before going the rest of the congregation for Holy Communion.

Thrift Store Hours:

Open for Donations Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Open for Sales Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 9AM to 1PM.

Helping Hands Needed at the Thrift Store!

We are currently looking for a few volunteers who could help us out. Guys or gals with muscle who can carry donations.

We've got tons to sort thru and put out for sale. Lots of seasonal items to sort and price too.

Would love help to organize 3 storage containers that are filled to the doors. But most of all, we need a steady cashier on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. If you can't commit to the whole day, anything in between would help a lot. Anyone out there who has some time to help on Saturdays to clean and tidy the store after our open hours would also be a God sent blessing.

Thank-you for your consideration! Please come talk to Rona Scull.

We have plenty Halloween costumes at the Thrift Store! Come check them out.

Feeding Bodies, Nourishing Souls, Building Community! ❤️

What a wonderful morning as members of our Community Meals Ministry gathered for a morning retreat at the Kamuela Inn!

It was a time to reflect, share ideas, plan for the future, and enjoy being together with some truly compassionate and dedicated people who help make our Community Meals such a blessing to so many.

A huge mahalo to Tim and Melanie for hosting us and providing such a wonderful setting and delicious food! Our Community Meals are about so much more than the food we serve. They are about building relationships, caring for our neighbors, and living God's aloha, one meal and one person at a time.

Mahalo to all who give so generously of their time, energy, and hearts to these ministries! What a blessing to serve together!

Waimea Community Meal

From Tim Bostock

Alfredo Alfresco!

Huge thanks to tonight’s Meal sponsors Goodfellow Brothers - they jumped in to fill a gap and brought cheery experienced volunteers to serve in the Tent. It was a tasty and well balanced dinner of Chicken Alfredo with broccoli and mushrooms, green salad, bread and Quinoa salad.

I saw two families opting for vegetarian - heaping plates with the salad only, which they happily finished off. The quinoa came from Costco a while ago and freezes well. Mel doctored it up this week with garbanzo beans, cucumber, fresh spinach, artichoke hearts, olives, garlic mushrooms, feta and secret dressing… very healthy and delicious.

Rick outdid himself with the pumpkin curry soup too. It’s good to know we produce a full meal for vegetarians if they come to the gathering. We served 284 in the tent tonight and delivered 412 for a total of 696 meals.

Kahilu Theatre donated tickets to Tomáš Kubinek one-man comedy show at the theatre on Saturday night - part of their new audience development program. Our diners and youth were delighted to take up the offers and so there’s a 20-strong St James youth and Community Meal contingent going to see Miracle Man this weekend.

The evening started off pretty damp but dried out by the end of service. The tent walls kept us cosy against the blustery winds but the open side allowed flowing air to remind us we’ll be alfresco until the gathering place is fully built. It is exciting to see it grow from the ground.

🌺 St. Columba Episcopal Church Community Meal — Aloha and Mahalo! 🌺

It was one of our quieter evenings, but we still had a wonderful time volunteering, gathering, and making memories with everyone who joined us.

Sharon did it again! Her delicious chicken curry with carrots, potatoes, and celery was a hit, especially when served with rice and her famous local-style macaroni salad. Using Wilma’s somewhat secret recipe, lovingly called the Basic Dressing, Wilma, Teresita, and I also made a Japanese cucumber pickle for our guests. They were a hit, too! 🥒❤️

We served 156 meals that evening, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.

A heartfelt mahalo to Greg and Mandy Frantz for sponsoring this community meal. Your generosity helps us continue bringing people together through good food, fellowship, and friendship.

We’d also like to thank Lee and Alex for sharing their musical talents and helping make the evening even more special. 🎶

We extend a very warm welcome back to Rev. Linda and Bob! 💒 After being away for eight months, it was wonderful to have them with us again at our first meal together in almost a year. Their presence made the evening even more special, and we are so happy to have them back!

To all our volunteers, thank you for giving your time, energy, and loving hearts. It is the coming together of our church family and community that makes these meals so meaningful. Every helping hand, every smile, and every shared moment makes a difference.

If you’d like to volunteer, we can always use an extra helping hand! Please contact Sharon at eat@stjameshawaii.org. We would love to have you join us as we continue sharing good food, friendship, and God’s love with our community.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meal on November 10!

Chock Store Renovations & Repairs: Update #2 10/12/2026

1) The back porch leading up to the stream-facing room now has stairs and rails. Daron and Carson have spent the past few weeks removing the rotten wood and sagging boards. Carson replaced it with new floor frames that are primed and moisture resistant. Rails are pictured and handrails were installed along the steps, with the final coat of paint going on Wednesday. Beautiful job, Carson!

2) The beam beneath the women’s bathroom is rotted and unstable. The plan is to remove and replace the beam with something more stable. The floorboards will also be removed and replaced.

3) One of the groups that meets in the Chock Store is very thankful for the newly renovated space. They donated new light fixtures! Aunty Pua spent time cleaning the room to prepare it for painting. Members will give the interior trim a facelift.

Thank you to Carson, Daron and Harry for sharing the details mentioned above. "Pupukahi i holomua", expresses how unity and collective endeavor enable a community to move forward together toward common goals.

On the first Thursday of each month from June through November, The Episcopal Church's Public Policy and Witness team will host a series of “Vote Faithfully” calls to support voter engagement in ways consistent with Episcopal values.

During the calls, hosts will share resources and ideas to help congregations promote voting and civic participation while remaining nonpartisan (avoiding support for specific political parties, candidates, or platforms).

Words of Wisdom

Community

Beginning the Lord's Prayer with the word “our” reminds us that we are not alone in our prayer. “Our” means we pray as part of the community centered around Jesus and his teaching. We pray with Jesus and with each other when we pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Br. Jamie Nelson, SSJE
