I’m so grateful that my involvement with the liturgy this year has allowed me to attend Mass regularly. It has been a privilege and a blessing. However, it has also been challenging to balance serving at Mass while staying engaged. Often it was hard to turn off my “work brain” and enjoy the celebration. My focus was lost, and I felt like I wasn’t getting much out of the Mass.
Now that we have additional Mass times and a Pastor, things have gotten more manageable. Parishioners are returning, we have less Covid protocols and I’m starting to enjoy Mass again. With renewed focus I’ve realized a few things that I’ve forgotten that make a huge difference in my Mass experience. I would like to share these things with you as you may have also struggled.
-
How we enter the church matters. Without Holy Water to bless ourselves, I realized I didn’t have that moment to acclimate myself to God’s house. I also realized I wasn’t genuflecting to the Tabernacle before I sat in the pew. I began doing this again and it has really helped me to be mindful about where I’m at and Jesus’s presence.
-
We are fed twice at Mass – during the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This is important because we need spiritual nourishment. So, I remind myself if I come late that I need to be considerate of others who are being fed by waiting at the door during the readings, homily, or Eucharistic prayers. Entering in the church during these times is very distracting. Conversely, if I notice someone else walking in during these times, I mustn’t think poorly of them or glare. Instead, I should be thankful that they arrived when they didn’t have to. Also, I’m thankful to God for the opportunity to strengthen my focus so distractions can’t bother me.
-
Kneeling helps us engage more deeply. When we kneel, we’re using what somatic psychologists call “body knowledge.” This means we think with our bodies as much as with our brains. In this instance, kneeling brings us to a place of humility and reverence to our Lord. It helps us to engage more deeply to the presence of Christ especially when we speak the words “Lord, I am not worthy that you shall enter under my roof…” I often cry during this part of the liturgy as my posture invites me to really believe in what is going on.
-
Lastly, it’s good to wait until the procession has left before we leave. After we are fed with Christ’s word and body, we are meant to bring Him into the world, and we do this by following Him out. However, if we leave before the procession, we miss out on this powerful ritual. My RCIA catechist told a joke that has helped me curb my urge to leave early. He asked, “Who was the first Christian to leave the Mass early?” The answer was Judas! I laughed when I first heard it, but it makes you think. Is our own agenda more important that we can’t wait? Staying until after the procession helps me to remember what I’m called to do when I leave and that is definitely worth the wait!
I hope this was helpful. See you Sunday!

We will begin a four-week study of the first letter of St. John to his community. Not the Gospel of John, but the first of his three letters will be the focus of our reflection. Light, love, and the truth are his principle themes. For more information or to register, please contact the parish office at 253-839-2320 or jsimpson@stvincentparish.org.

Baptism of young children at
St. Vincent parish
We celebrate baptisms of young children (0-6 years) five times each year at one of our weekend Masses. Parents/guardians are asked to participate in Baptism Preparation Classes to update their understanding of baptism, the important responsibilities of Christian parenting, and to learn more about the many ways our parish supports families. To schedule an initial interview and reserve a date for your child's baptism, or for more information, please contact John Simpson at jsimpson@stvincentparish.org or through the parish office at 253-839-2320.
Commonly Asked Questions:
Are there any requirements in order to have my child baptized at St. Vincent? Parents/Guardians are required to be a baptized Catholic and a registered parishioner for more than six months.
Who can be a godparent? Church law requires that there must be at least one qualified godparent for the child baptized. Godparents need to be active, practicing and confirmed Catholics at least 16 years in age. Godparents need to submit written proof of registration from their parish.
Can a non-Catholic be a godparent? No, only a Catholic can be a godparent because they are asked to promise to help support raising the child in the Catholic faith.
What if the godparents can't come to the actual celebration? You can have a proxy stand in for the godparent(s) if they live in another area, state or, are otherwise unavailable.
Can I schedule a private baptism? No, unless there is an exceptional circumstance. Baptism celebrates the initiation of the child into the parish community and it is very important that the community is present at the time of the celebration.
