NEWS FROM PARISH STAFF
Dear Parishioners,

I turned the keys off to the ignition, entered my house and immediately plopped down on the couch. It was Saturday afternoon and I was exhausted. It had been an incredibly busy week and yet everything in that moment felt right….more right than it had in a long time. I was so full of hope and joy. Joy for what I had witnessed and hope for what was yet to come.

Tuesday rolled around and we had one of our many High School Revival Retreat planning meetings. This team of 6 adults and 6 HS seniors have been pouring their hearts and souls into preparing a weekend retreat for 40 HS youth. They are preparing to share their own faith journeys, they are spending Tuesdays practicing skits and silly dances. They are creating activities, coming up with reflections, and having courageous conversations about their faith. Why are they doing this? They are doing this because God and their communities have left an indelible mark on their heart and they want to share that joy with anyone who will listen. Their hearts are on fire and they give because it simply overflows from them. How can one not be inspired by their spirit?

Wednesday we had the social hall full of HS parents coming to learn about the Revival Retreat. Gratefulness, excitement and just pure elation could be felt in the room. After several years of not being able to gather for retreat their children were now going to get a chance to get away with their peers into the mountains, without their phones and open themselves up to hearing God’s voice. Energy was high and the Holy Spirit swirled all around us.

Then Saturday came we had our first team building event for Mission Trek! With 36 middle school and high school youth signed up and 9 adults we began the process of starting to get to know each other. Mission Trek strives to see the face of Jesus in everyone we meet and serve. We strive for quality relationships and holy moments. These youths came in quiet and unsure of what to expect. I mean it had been almost over 2 years since we had gathered as a Mission Trek family. Over the course of the next 3 hours, these youths subjected themselves to activities that would challenge them, shed light on their strengths and weaknesses and encourage them to lean on each other. As I sat and watched the team and youth interact the familiar feelings of connection, of strength in community and that joy that bubbles up when we give was fully present. Was this really all happening?

What a week it had been. A week of “firsts in a long time” if you will. Our SVDP youth community is continuing to come alive. The Holy Spirit is here and our youth are responding to its call with an overwhelming, “YES!”

Thank you Lord Jesus for the hope they are to our community!

On a separate note: All experienced Altar Servers who would like to serve during Holy Week, especially during the Triduum; Holy Thursday, Good Friday or the Easter Vigil, please let us know.  In the near future, we’ll have special training for these, along with rehearsals.

All children in the 5th grade and above who have received their First Communion may become an altar server. Their parents may email Kathleen and Leonard Kessler at kaannke@gmail.com and provide the following information: your name, your child’s name, birthday, age, attending school, phone number, and which Masses he/she would serve. There will be at least 3 one-hour training sessions for new Altar Servers. Please include the days and times that these training sessions would work for you. We are available weekdays after school (except Wednesdays). We are also available Saturday mornings/early afternoons and Sundays at 12:15pm after the 11:00 mass. We’ll meet your child in the South Narthex. Parents may drop off/pick up their child.
Pope Francis wants to hear from you. How cool is that? We are going to hold two listening session to hear what you want to say to Pope Francis. These two session are going to be a powerful opportunity to pray and be heard. Fr. Frank will share about the power of listening and begin adoration. Then we will break into small groups to listen and share. After our small groups we will come back to the Church for adoration and Benediction. The first session will be February 25 from 10am to 11:30am. Please sign up in the parish office or here St. Vincent de Paul Parish: Synod Listening Session I (signupgenius.com). Our second session will be March 17 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Please register in the parish office or here St. Vincent de Paul Parish: Synod Listening Session II (signupgenius.com).
The Little Black Book for Lent are available after Mass in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. This year we also have a Children’s Book. We ask for $1.00 donation to defer the cost, but don’t let that stop you from getting a copy.

This Little Black Book is your companion for Lent that travels easily in your pocket, purse, glove compartment. The goal is to find six minutes of quiet time every day for the next 50 days to walk through this book a page at a time. Six minutes. That’s within reach. And it pays big returns. You can use this Little Black Book anywhere.

The key is the right-hand page, which will walk through the Sunday Gospels for this Lent (Cycle A), with explanations and reflections along the way. It’s an ancient way of praying the Scriptures – called lectio divina. God speaks to us “live” through the sacred word and we’re often surprised at the thoughts that come.
The left-hand page has a variety of quotes, information, timely thoughts. Treat it like a buffet table from which you can take what you like.

Please bring your palms from last year to church and place in the basket in the narthex and we will use them for the ashes on Ash Wednesday this year.
