Many years ago when I applied for the job of Parish Administrator, a friend of mine who had worked in ministry for several years told me that parish work is great, but I should prepare to “have my eyes opened” – the implication being that it is not all incense and angels behind the scenes at your local church. Her warning turned out to be accurate, but in a different way than she intended.
I came to this job at a time when the parish was struggling financially from the effects of the recession and decreased contributions. Within the first few weeks I was here, a parishioner came into my office with a check for $40,000 from an IRA she had cashed in. She wanted to give it to the parish to help out.
Within the first month I was here, I was struggling to find volunteers to help with some of my new duties. A woman came in who had just retired, and was looking for something to do to help. She was willing to do anything and everything – and she did for several years, becoming a dear friend in the process.
As the years have passed I have had the privilege of observing how many of our faithful parishioners give of their treasure every week or every month – those on fixed incomes and those with large, growing families, who never miss a Sunday contribution. I am witness to the hundreds of volunteers who have graced us over the years with their time - in support of our liturgies, our religious ed programs, our school, our councils and commissions, our parish mailings, our events.
I am in awe of the people of this parish. The goodness, the commitment to their faith, the selflessness, the generosity. In a little over a month I will no longer be in a position to experience the “behind the scenes” of the parish as I retire from the job of Parish Administrator, a move that was planned before the pandemic, but was put on hold for more than a year. It’s a bittersweet transition. I am excited for a new phase, but sad to leave the beauty I’ve experienced in people here-parishioners and parish staff alike. Thank you to all who helped “open my eyes”. Your grace and kindness and GOODNESS will stay with me always.
-Tracey Rockwell

ARE YOU, or someone you know, INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is a process of initiation into the Catholic Community of Faith. This is for adults who are seeking baptism in the Catholic Church or full communion with the Catholic tradition. It is a process which employs study of the Gospels, Catholic teaching, and Christian values. We also focus on the development and deepening of a life of prayer and involvement in the parish community. You can learn more by contacting John Simpson, 253-839-2320, ext. 209 or jsimpson@stvincentparish.org.
