Recently, I read an article in which a fellow reminisced about watching home movies. Specifically, he had been watching a video of his then four-year-old girl taking swimming lessons. As he described her purple lips and chattering teeth a swimming lesson memory of my own came flooding back.
As a child I remember that my mother was afraid of the water. That fear became part of the family’s emotional atmosphere. So as soon as I was old enough she enrolled me for swimming lessons at the local high school pool. I was maybe six or seven years old and she didn’t want me to be afraid of the water like she was. Too late! I remember being filled with anxiety standing with the other kids at the shallow end of the pool. I don’t have a home movie to verify it, but I imagine my lips were purple. I do remember shivering and my teeth chattering. The first part of the lesson of course is learning to float. Floating face down, no problem. Floating on my back… no way. I couldn’t do it. I would tense up and sink making my anxiety worse.
At this point the instructor singled me out and took me to the deep end of the pool. She reassured me that she wouldn’t let me sink. She put her hand underneath my spine and gently supported me. It took some doing but eventually I trusted her enough to relax. When I did, voilà, I could float on my back!
The correlation to the life of faith is perhaps, obvious. Faith is surrendering or trusting our life to God. This is hard. Letting go of one’s life and truly putting it in God’s hands can make our lips turn purple and our teeth chatter with anxiety. It’s human nature to tense up and to flail. But like St. Peter who walked on the water, if we look to Jesus he will not let us sink. In so many unseen ways the Lord assists us. If only we can relax, feel his love for us, and accept his support, in turn he will lead us well.

Bible Study Returns! Our study begins August 17th, with two sessions on Tuesdays at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM in the S. Narthex. We will begin a four-week study of the first letter of St. John to his community. Not the Gospel of John, but the first of his three letters will be the focus of our reflection. Light, love, and the truth are his principle themes. For more information or to register, please contact the parish office at 253-839-2320 or jsimpson@stvincentparish.org.

Do you have a child seeking baptism?
The RCIA Adapted for Children is a process by which children over the age of 7 who are either unbaptized or uncatechized learn about and are formed in the Catholic faith, heading toward the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. (Whichever ones they haven’t received yet.)
Class will begin in September!

Baptism of young children at
St. Vincent parish
We celebrate baptisms of young children (0-6 years) five times each year at one of our weekend Masses. Parents/guardians are asked to participate in Baptism Preparation Classes to update their understanding of baptism, the important responsibilities of Christian parenting, and to learn more about the many ways our parish supports families. To schedule an initial interview and reserve a date for your child's baptism, or for more information, please contact John Simpson at jsimpson@stvincentparish.org or through the parish office at 253-839-2320.
Commonly Asked Questions:
Are there any requirements in order to have my child baptized at St. Vincent? Parents/Guardians are required to be a baptized Catholic and a registered parishioner for more than six months.
Who can be a godparent? Church law requires that there must be at least one qualified godparent for the child baptized. Godparents need to be active, practicing and confirmed Catholics at least 16 years in age. Godparents need to submit written proof of registration from their parish.
Can a non-Catholic be a godparent? No, only a Catholic can be a godparent because they are asked to promise to help support raising the child in the Catholic faith.
What if the godparents can't come to the actual celebration? You can have a proxy stand in for the godparent(s) if they live in another area, state or, are otherwise unavailable.
Can I schedule a private baptism? No, unless there is an exceptional circumstance. Baptism celebrates the initiation of the child into the parish community and it is very important that the community is present at the time of the celebration.
