A letter to our Parishioners
|
|
Dear Parishioners,
As St. Paul told the Corinthians when they tried to credit him as the source of their Christian life, “I planted, Apollos watered, but it was God who gave the growth.” The simple yet profound fact is that God works through each of us to touch others in the particularity of their lives. This is also the beautiful mystery of the sacramental priesthood: that Jesus has entrusted his own work of reconciliation and love to men he continues to call and send. The call to priesthood that I have followed through seven years of seminary has enriched my life in so many ways. Most importantly, it has rooted me and challenged me to go ever-deeper in my relationship with Christ. So I give thanks above all to Almighty God for the gift of his goodness and mercy. I also want to take this opportunity to thank those who planted and watered the seeds of my faith along the way.
Those seeds were planted first and foremost by my family, who gave me a solid foundation in the faith and nurtured it by their love, generosity, and constancy. The gift of a stable home, a Catholic education, and the unconditional love they have shown was my first experience of God’s goodness.
Anyone who has known me for a while will testify that family, learning, and music are all very important to me. But this journey to priesthood has taught me the necessity of prayer as the foundation of each and every day, the first priority and defining aspect of life. We certainly need to pray for vocations, but we also need to create gardens of prayer in which those seeds can be planted: opportunities for young people to sit before God and speak with him in the silence of their hearts. I am so thankful for those who have done this for me, especially the staff at the Palisades who have welcomed me time and again to encounter Christ in the peace of the chapel and grounds there, as well as my spiritual directors throughout seminary.
Christ promised his disciples that although they were giving up family and home for the sake of the Kingdom, they would receive a hundred-fold more even in this present age. I have traveled a lot these past seven years and have experienced this promise of Christ firsthand in the many parishes, priests, and friends who welcomed me into their houses. From Durango to Roanoke and everywhere in between, my travels have been made personal by the hospitality of people who only knew me by our shared faith but with whom I have since become friends. Closer to home, I am so grateful for the parishes where I have served during seminary, the various councils and organizations who have supported me with their prayers and resources, and all those on the parish staff here at St. Vincent’s and in the Vocations Office at the archdiocese. Your friendships have “pruned” me, helping me to grow as a person and as a disciple of the Lord.
As my priestly ministry begins, I now have the joy of planting and watering new seeds in the Lord’s vineyard. My first assignment will be at All Saints in Puyallup and St. Martin of Tours in Fife. I will be keeping you all in my prayers and ask that you do the same for me.
Sincerely in Christ,
Michael Barbarossa
