Dear Friends in Christ -

The official name of the Paulist Fathers religious community is the "Missionary Society of Saint Paul the Apostle." The initials after our names, "CSP", Congregation of St. Paul shortened from the Latin: Societas Sacerdotum Missionariorum a Sancto Paulo Apostolo.

Our founder, Servant of God, Isaac Hecker and the early Paulists felt called to serve as missionaries to the United States. Cardinal Tobin of New Jersey described our mission well at a Paulist ordination mass a few years ago when he said, "“From its very origin, your congregation has sought to speak the word of God in a language that people can understand. Servant of God Isaac Hecker and his companions suffered much for this passion. Yet their perseverance has enriched the Church in incredible ways."

Many of our typical transitions have been delayed by the pandemic. For our LA Paulist community, we have three transitions and two in the parish. Those who are moving on have embodied the gospel in different ways, in word and deed, that people can understand.

With thanksgiving to God and gratitude for their service to our entire parish community:

Father Ryan will leaving us on July 1st to become the new Associate Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish - Newman Hall at the University of California, Berkeley effective July 1, 2022. In addition to leading our Eucharistic celebrations, Father Ryan has prepared infants and their families for baptism and shepherded our Confirmation program for our young people. (He will not be replaced by a new associate pastor.)

Dan Macalinao, our Paulist seminarian who joined us for his pastoral year last August, will be returning to Washington, DC to continue his theological studies at Catholic University of America also on July 1st. Dan has been a great presence for our children receiving First Communion; developed our digital presence -- including spearheading our live stream capabilities; he has preached and offered adult formation programs; and coordinated VIA, our young adult ministry. (Beginning in August, we will receive another Paulist seminarian for his pastoral year.)

Father Michael Hennessy, Paulist Vocation Director will be leaving us, too. He will continue in the vocation ministry at our Mother House at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York City.

Mrs. Irene Holly, our Director of Religious Education for the last 29 years is retiring effective June 1st. She has helped prepare and coordinate the faith formation of hundreds of our children over the years, particularly for First Holy Communion and the Christian initiation of older children.

Mr. Pedro Fuentes, one of dedicated maintenance team members, is also retiring after nearly 23 years. His has been part of our team which lovingly cares for our buildings and property. His kindness and patience have touched everyone who has encountered him.

Their perseverance and passion have enriched our community in many ways far beyond any listing of their duties. We are grateful for the way they have shared their faith.

We will miss them all. We will acknowledge their service at smaller events at the school and John Carroll Parish Center. For a wider appreciation, we will recognize their time with us at mass on Sunday, June 26th at 9:30 AM followed by a reception. Please join us then and show your appreciation.

Peace, Father Gil

Join Aaron Pergram (bassoon) and Jeffrey Parola (organ) on a musical exploration of what we, as humans, hold sacred. Some works touch on the memory of the dead, others on the vernal equinox. Featured music includes the oldest surviving complete musical composition, Islamic prayer song, Byzantine Greek hymns, scenes from Jewish life, and more. This sacred and secular journey of spiritual connection and healing through music will provide a time for reflection and healing. Composers include Seikilos, Kassia, Grandi, Bloch, King, Price, Vivaldi, Hines, Pérotin, and Hildegard von Bingen.

Catholic Relief Services partners on the ground across Ukraine and in bordering countries ready to provide safe shelter, hot meals, hygiene supplies, transport to safe areas, counseling support and more.
