Message from Miguel Garcia, Iskali Missionary
What an incredible ride this year has been!
Last year, I felt a strong calling to quit my job just two months before the year ended. I had no idea what God had planned for me, but I stayed obedient. Shortly after, the opportunity to become a missionary for young adults at my parish in partnership with Iskali came to light. Even without any leadership experience in the Church, I took a leap of faith. I trusted that this was God’s will, and the mission began at St. Patrick and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
We started our young adult community on February 4th of this year with just over 10 members from all around the Milwaukee area even from Racine, Burlington, and Brookfield. It quickly became clear that this ministry was deeply needed for Latino young adults on the South Side. Today, we’ve grown to over 25 regular members who come each week for community, friendship, and faith.
I am incredibly proud to share everything this ministry accomplished in less than a year for young adults:
• Three adoration hours
• Social events outside the parish
• Weekly community nights
• Sports nights
• Involvement in parish celebrations and activities
But the impact didn’t stop at our parish.
Our Iskali young adults brought light to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, helping at retreats and serving our Hispanic community, collaborating with Mexican Fiesta by serving during Mass and leading rosaries throughout the festival, and even being special guests at Brew City Catholic events.
What a year! Truly, the Holy Spirit has worked powerfully through this ministry. I’m proud to say leaders have risen from this community, now serving as Iskali coordinators, catechism teachers, retreat helpers, and young adults ready to serve wherever they’re needed.
As for me, my missionary contract has come to an end. I leave transformed a different man of God. Thank you to both St. Patrick and Our Lady of Guadalupe for the love, the welcome, and the acceptance you have given me.
This is not a goodbye, only a goodbye to the missionary position. Even without the title, I will always be a missionary at heart and ready to serve my parish. I’m excited for the next young adult missionary coming next year, and I know they will do even greater things for our parish. I leave with peace in my heart and excitement for where God will call me next.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
And happy holidays!
