GRANT ROAD AND JEFFERSON PARK
..."opportunities" not guarantees
| |
|
Have you driven down Grant Road heading east lately? You will see the TEP poles, remnant parcels, etc. It is a harbinger of things to come. That project is due to be finished by 2026.Then it moves west. JP will lose homes from Santa Rita to Highland on the south side of Grant Road.
The remnant parcels are designated as "opportunities," not guarantees. The Grant Road Coalition, working with city and state entities, was responsible for the Jefferson Park Health and Heritage Trail. That trail now serves as greenspace for all and mitigation for the JP homes on Edison.
| |
| |
UNDERSTANDING THE "Opportunities":
Purple stands for the remnant parcels, and green is the Department of Transportation Right of Way. On the left are the residences, and on the right will be the six-lane Grant Road.
Currently the plans are:
“*The project will plant trees and other vegetation in the areas shaded in green (between the curb and the new right-of-way line).
*The space shaded in green will be maintained by the contractor during the “landscape establishment” period. This is usually 18-24 month after planting. During this time they are responsible for replacing any vegetation that does not survive early on.
*After the landscape establishment period, the City crews will be responsible for maintaining the space shaded in green... There is no irrigation for the existing established trees in the purple area”
* RE: Maintaining the purple after 2 years: “At this time, I am not sure what DTM would need to keep maintaining an area that is not transportation related.”
So, there are six lanes of asphalt with no plans for greenspace mitigation—no added vegetation, no pathway, no berms, and no added irrigation for the remnants. The Grant Road Coalition is advocating for mitigation, such as a continuation of the Health and Heritage Trail. They will need all the help they can get. If you want to understand more, see the white paper and the efforts of the Grant Road Coalition at:

June 1 Meeting Honoring Michael Ortega and Steve Kozachik | |
|
City of Tucson Neighborhood Associations Reps
You are invited to a Community Special Event
Sponsored by Tucson Residents for Responsive Government
GOOD-BYE, Michael and Steve; HELLO, Tim
Saturday, June 1, 2024 - 1:00-2:30
Ward 6 Community Room, 3202 E. First St.
2024 has become the year of transition. Residents are losing the two City of Tucson officials who were most instrumental in our grassroots organization, Tucson Residents for Responsive Government (TRRG), enduring for ten years. And, TRRG, itself, is Moving Forward, putting greater emphasis on advocating for effective, participatory government. We see strong neighborhood associations as foundational to that effort.
Come June 1 to recognize the extraordinary service of out-going City Manager Michael Ortega and former Council member Steve Kozachik; hear their recommendations for how residents can better meet the TRRG goal of more meaningful public participation.
Please RSVP to Bonnie Poulos (poulosbt@gmail.com) if you plan to attend.
