Jen Jones
School Counselor
|
|
Jen Jones is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with the State of Florida and has been a nationally credentialed counselor for nearly 20 years. After graduating from graduate school at Stetson University in 2000, she began her counseling career in the school setting. In that setting, she worked with children with academic, social, and behavioral concerns from Kindergarten to 12th grade. After Jen started her own family, she focused on obtaining Florida State licensure and after doing so, started her own private practice where she worked with children & families. For the next 10 years, she hired and worked with a skilled team of collaborative clinicians & educators who embodied the term “whole child”.
In her practice, Jen specialized her own work in academic
consultation, family relationships, and divorce adjustment & concerns. Jen is trained as a Parenting Coordinator as well as a Family Mediator in the State of Florida. After honing her skills working in private practice, Jen is excited to return to a school setting where all of her expertise, experience and collaboration will be utilized for students, parents, teachers and administration.

Swimming has been intertwined through nearly all of my years as a native Orlandoan. The neighborhood pool manager, swimming instructor, and head swim coach was my father, Coach Harry Meisel. Learning to swim and compete was made easy by spending the better part of every summer day at the pool watching my father teach and coach. The generosity of the Alfond family and others allowed Rollins College to build a pool in 1972. Kevin’s father was named aquatics director and founded the Blue Dolfins swim team with a dozen swimmers.
After earning a scholarship and swimming for East Carolina University, I joined my Dad on the pool deck in 1980. Thanks to an invitation from a Park Maitland administrator with three children swimming for the Blue Dolfins, I began teaching at Park Maitland in 1995 with Mrs. June Newell and Miss April McAtee.
Getting kids from "bubbles and basics" to "strokes of genius" continues to be my primary role. My ultimate goal is to instill those skills in young students with emphasis on fundamentals and proper stroke mechanics. The combination of talented athletes with sound fundamental skills earned me two Schlueter Stroke Awards presented annually by the American Swim Coaches Association.
A self described character flaw I am not likely to change is judging my own performance by the success of the weakest member of his group. “Early promise or apparent lack of ability does not guarantee success or failure in this or any other endeavor. Coaches and teachers must be patient in either case. Good times take time!”
I am grateful for the foresight and sacrifice of my parents and other members of the "Greatest Generation" who made my career possible at Park Maitland School. Mrs. Nell Cohen and Mr. Bill Cohen founded the School and hired Mrs. June Newell to teach swimming as their first employee. It continues to be an honor and privilege for me to continue the legacy established by those before me.
