Park Maitland School Newsletter
This Week’s Park Maitland School Community COVID Case Update

This week’s community case number is 5.

We continue our utmost efforts to ensure the safety and health of the students, staff and guests.

We thank our school community for your cooperation, patience and flexibility.

Park Maitland Families,

As you know, priority re-enrollment started this week, and we are excited at the high percentage of families who are returning next school year and have already solidified their spot.

Priority re-enrollment will end on Monday, January 24th. All families who enroll during the re-enrollment period will be given priority consideration at Park Maitland for the 2022-2023 school year. On January 25th, enrollment will be open to new Park Maitland families. We currently have an extensive list of potential families waiting to enroll; thus, we strongly encourage current families to re-enroll prior to January 25th if your plan is to return next school year. This now includes many of our upper-grade levels, not just our lower grades.

As always, we appreciate your support and are already planning fun events for the 2022-23SY!

PARK MAITLAND HUNGER HEROES

February 14th is our annual "Park Maitland Gives Back" day. Each year, we set a goal and create a project for the entire school community. This year, we will be packaging 25,000 meals that will help feed needy families in Central Florida. To supply the materials and transportation for the 25,000 meals, we need your help raising $7,100. We Schools in Action student ambassadors have organized several fundraising options to help us earn the money.

To be a Hunger Hero, check out the flyer and the video for more information.

Link to buy Park Maitland Hats: When you buy a hat from the link below, we get a portion of the proceeds toward our fundraising goal. All hats purchased with the link will be shipped to the school on February 9th. Get some swag and be a hero!

Mark Your Calendars!

We are excited to announce that Edgar Award Winning Author, James Ponti will be visiting our 3rd-5th graders, in person, on Friday, February 4 from 8:30-9:30am to promote his third book in the City Spies Series: City Spies: Forbidden City!!!

Attached below are two very short videos Mr. Ponti has made to generate excitement about his visit. Please feel free to show one or both of them to your child(ren) before his visit. He says the first video is a little more silly and informal.

Please see the flyer (also attached for your convenience) with the option for students to purchase personalized autographed books.

It is very important that checks are made out to Barnes & Noble or exact change is included. The price includes tax. Forms and payments must be turned in no later than Friday, January 28. Money needs to go to Barnes and Noble on that day. Ms. Talbert has spoken with Mr. Ponti personally, and he said that since he is local, if a student sees his presentation and then decides he/she would like a book autographed, he will gladly make arrangements for this.

Take-Apart Items Collection
It is an annual tradition at Park Maitland School to host take apart days through Design Thinking and Tinkering Lab classes. This tradition allows students to carefully and strategically take apart old items as they peel back the layers of various toys, devices, and household appliances to see how things look and work beneath their outer shell. This year, in addition to this tradition of taking apart items, we are growing this experience to include a making component, where students also look at each item they are taking apart and try to imagine how they can reuse and repurpose its parts for something else.

Doing any winter cleaning?
We would like to start this process sooner than our traditional end-of-year event. As such, we need your help! Looking to do some winter cleaning? Starting January, we will have a collection bin at morning carpool, so that you can start to drop off items for our take-apart days at Park Maitland School.

What to bring:
  • Toys
  • Gadgets
  • Electronic Items
  • Mechanical Items
  • Household Appliances
  • Etc. (Avoid items w/ glass)

When selecting the take-apart items to send in, please also consider the following:

  • Size of item: Please send in an item of a manageable size as they will need to be able to carry and manipulate as they explore how to take it apart.
  • It will be recycled: Students will be looking for ways to reuse and/or recycle the parts they disassemble. Please do not send anything that you would hope to get back.
  • Is it safe? Certain Items like copier printers and TVs come with higher risk factors. Copier printers, for example, typically have glass inside of it that can break. Tube-style televisions store high voltage even when unplugged. As you consider the item, please pick an item that is safe for your child to take apart.
  • Is it age-appropriate? Also consider how easy/hard this item may be for them to take apart. For younger students, something like an old keyboard and mouse will be easier for them to take apart as they can start by popping off the keys.

Thank you for partnering with us as we look to continue with this wonder-filled tradition! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Andrés Joubert (ajoubert@parkmaitland.com).
Teacher Tuesday
This is my second year at Park Maitland, and I am thrilled to be part of the Park Maitland family. I am the K4 Yellow Homeroom Teacher and the K4 Assistant Teacher. I absolutely love my job. I've been working in early childhood education for 21 years. During all my years, there's never been a dull moment with the children. I love seeing them grow throughout the year. They brighten my days just with a smile. They truly make my work enjoyable.

I enjoy all the events and traditions each week in the classrooms. It's so much fun seeing the teachers and students dress up for our letter people parades. I'm always looking forward to all the exciting activities in the classroom. Our Pirate Day and QU wedding would have to be my two favorite traditions. My favorite moment was when I first got to see the kids perform for their parents at the QU wedding. It was very touching.

Outside of school, I love spending time with my husband, Joe, and my sons, Lee and Connor. You can find me cozying up with my dog, Barklee, and cat, Neptune. I love to travel and explore new cultures. However, my favorite place to be is by the beach at Saint Augustine.
Thank you as always to the incredible Aimee Nocero (mom of Chase L., 3 green) for making these beautiful poster boards for our Teacher of the Week.

Featured in an article our very own
Art teacher Ms. Sandy Bonus,
we are so proud of her.
SANDY BONUS, NAEA
ART INSTRUCTOR AT THE MAYFLOWER FOR 10 YEARS
Sandy's home in Maitland reflects her charming personality and her art. Her home is colorful with art everywhere. Unexpected objects give the eye a place to rest and reflect. For instance, there are beautiful chandeliers, lamps, draperies, a grand piano, and a huge carved wooden mantlepiece, which, while over scaled, looks perfectly in scale in her gracious living room. She does exquisite finishes on wooden pieces and lamps.

Each room is alive with color. Sandy's talent for arranging may be why she has so many clients lined up for help with shopping. Sandy has a corporation called Sandy Bonus Fine Art, Inc. She travels with her clients all over the country looking for a particular piece for a special place. She helps restaurants and professional businesses with design dilemmas.

Sandy studied design drawing with the iconic William Kirby Lockhart at Florida State University. Her studies did not end there. She got additional training at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Ringling Art Museum in Sarasota. She has a passion for art and is definitely a visionary and an idealist. She has also taught at Park Maitland School for 27 years.
