Third-grade students became authors as they celebrated their incredible annual language arts event. They began the day by welcoming guest author Margaret Mincks, author of President of Poplar Lane and Payback on Poplar Lane. Her interactive presentation kept the students engaged. "It was amazing to hear the backstories of the books she wrote, " Monroe A. said. Afterwards, students enjoyed a full day, immersed in poetry, reading, and writing. "The sleeping bags event was so fun reading books under the stars with my friends," Addy H. said. "I had so much fun reading different poems. We even got to act them out," Presley R. said. "I really enjoyed the crafts. I really like how we decorated the frame," Suri P. said. By the end of the day, all of third grade were official authors. "It was fun to listen to other friends read stories about different topics like animals, or how to lose a tooth, or fun facts about themself," Quillyn H. said.

It’s the tail end of the big bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging. Aqua Net, Lycra, and Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip‘s last legendary venues. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing. He also longs for small-town girl, Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes. However, the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri, and the gang save the strip—and themselves—before it’s too late?

On Friday April 22nd (4th - 6th Grade) and Monday April 25th (K5 - 3rd Grade), we will be celebrating and honoring this amazing planet we call home by hosting an Earth Maker Day. lt will be a school-wide event with the goal of planting seeds and setting off a rippling effect across our student body and local community! Students will take part in designing and making activities throughout the day to both create awareness, and also develop better practices and solutions that can be applied at school and beyond!
We need your help!
As we prepare for this amazing day, and a greener future, we need your help! To support many of the activities taking place around campus on Earth Maker Day, we are in need of both supplies for students to use during their design and makes, as well as volunteers to help support the projects students are working on.
Seeking Materials
Please take some time and see if you have any of these materials you could donate:
Recyclables: clean bottles, bags, paper, etc.
Old clothes, fabrics, ribbon, and textiles
Odd-end materials and left-over parts (zippers, brackets, washers, handles, packaging, and anything else that can be upcycled and repurposed)
These materials will be used for upcycling and repurposing projects. Starting Monday April 4th, through Thursday April 21st, we will have bins at drop off where students can drop these items off.
Seeking Volunteers
Have Maker Skills? We are looking for a few parent volunteers for our Earth Maker Day Events. Join us for Upcycled Maker Challenges. Our 4-6 grade event is on April 22, and you can sign up here. Our K5-3 grade event is on April 25, and you can sign up here.
We appreciate your support on this journey for a better tomorrow! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

I've taught at Park Maitland School for 39 years. I started when I was 25 years old, fresh out of UCF. I was the music director for the Civic Theater of Central Florida and was playing piano for auditions, and Phyllis Mandler, former drama teacher, spotted me and asked if I was interested in a job at Park Maitland. I arranged to meet with Mrs. Cohen and came by the school. She showed me the music room and I was hooked. In the first several years I taught Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and only taught grades 4, 5, and 6. Eventually, the lower grades music teacher was pregnant and wanted a lighter teaching load. We worked it out for me to take over her 1st and 2nd grade classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Boy, what fun. When we started school in the new gym, I gave up 1st grade and became the 2nd - 6th grade music teacher. A few years ago I lightened up my class load a bit more and started to teach 2nd-4th grades. Today, April 5th, I turn 65. It's been a long time at Park Maitland School. I've made many friends. I hope to continue to make more friends as time marches on. All I wanted was for children to learn to listen and to think for themselves. I hope they are doing that. I'm sure they are doing that.
