Park Maitland Families,
In 2008, I moved to Orlando and took a job teaching history at Park Maitland. One of the highlights of that first year was the annual 5th-grade trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. After spending weeks discussing colonial America in class, we boarded a plane to enjoy a powerful learning experience where we immersed ourselves in the past. The trip began in Jamestown, Virginia, the first lasting British colony which became the roots of the United States of America. Other highlights of the trip included a reenactment of Patrick Henry’s “give me liberty or give me death speech,” a visit to Thomas Jefferson’s home -Monticello, a witch trial, a fully costumed dinner party, and a tour of the battlefield in Yorktown. The battle of Yorktown represented the last major battle of the Revolutionary War and led to America’s recognition as an independent nation.
That first trip solidified my love for Park Maitland and for the depth of education that the school’s rich traditions provide. As we get ready to embark on what will be my thirteenth trip to Williamsburg on October 12th, my love for this school continues to grow. I am now the assistant principal, and though I do not get to spend as much time in the classroom, I still get to help organize this invaluable learning experience.
I am exceedingly grateful to be part of the family that is Park Maitland. We continue to provide a personalized learning experience with meaningful, content-driven school events. Our students thrive as leaders in academics, in sports, and through our student outreach initiatives. Thank you for sharing your students with us, and thank you for your continued partnership.
Warmly,
John Courson, EdD

Parents... Any request for children being picked up by someone other than the usual driver, you will need to call or contact us before 1 pm on that day. This will ensure we are able to communicate with staff and children ahead of time.
|
We encourage every family to check their ALMA account on a weekly basis.
Checking your account regularly will allow you to view any incidental charges and/or updates to your account and more importantly allow time if there are any adjustments that need to be made prior to the billing due date.
Please be reminded that monthly tuition billing will load to your account on the 1st of each month. All charges are due by the 5th of the month.
If your family is signed up for ACH, all monthly charges will draft on the 3rd. Late payments will incur a 1.5% late fee charge. We appreciate your efforts and partnership to meet these expectations.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Business Office with any questions and/or concerns.

Park Maitland has been my home away from home for as long as I can remember. I started as a K-4 student and never seemed to leave. This is my 25th year as a full-time teacher at Park Maitland School. I was a substitute teacher for two years before Mrs. Cohen offered me a Reading Literature and 1st grade aide position. She knew I wanted to teach drama, but that position wasn’t available. Two weeks before the next school year started, Mrs. Cohen told me there was an opening, and the K-4 through 2nd grade drama position was mine. I was beyond excited to combine my love for teaching and my love of theatre!!
Back then, things were a tad different. There wasn’t a dedicated room for drama, so I traveled all over campus and even taught drama next to 5th grade math! I have taught and assisted many different subjects over the years. I even taught PE for an entire year. (I’ll leave that to Ms. Rios and all the other amazing PE professionals!)
It is challenging to pick a favorite memory, but I’ll try. Creating “It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny” as a K-4 show ranks pretty high up there. My mom purchased that book for her granddaughter, Katie. Katie adored it and always asked my mom, my sister/Ms. Rios, or me to read it to her. When it was time for Katie to start Park Maitland, I knew I wanted to turn this book into a show. Mrs. Davis was the K-4 music teacher and director at the time, and she allowed me to run with my idea. I asked Mr. Nelson to write the music; I adapted the script; and my husband would play the piano for rehearsals and performances. The day of the show came. While I was onstage narrating the show, I could look out and see my mom, my aunt, who was the Dean of Students at the time, my sister, my husband, and all the parents and loved ones watching in awe at these awesome and adorable K-4s in their first performance at Park Maitland. It was a special full circle moment. That and Katie shouting out “Train!” (You just had to be there.)
I honestly love being able to watch the audience watch their kiddos perform. The laughter, the smiles, the hesitant moments when you don’t know what is going to happen, the huge applause at the end. It is magical. My mom always said that watching my shows made everything else better. No matter what else was going on in the world, during those minutes, everything was better. I am so grateful and honored that I could give that feeling to her and, hopefully, to others.
When I am not at school, I love spending time with “Mr. Ballard” (aka my husband Doug) and watching TV, movies, and theatre. I am out of practice going to the last one. I’m so glad live theatre is back up and running! I also love trivia nights as well as college football and basketball. So, join me in a Sic ‘em Bears or a Let’s Go, Duke!
Park Maitland is where I grew up, and it gave me every opportunity to be the person I am today. Creativity, laughter, and silliness for the win.
