22nd Annual Millrace Massacre and Iceman Championships
Congratulations to Lead Ranger Andy Grizzell for an extraordinary achievement earning national recognition from American Whitewater as Volunteer of the Month.
Caption: Top picture-Pictured with Selwyn Blake, owner of Strictly Running and professional timer for races.
For 22 years now, Andy Grizzell has organized the Millrace Massacre and Iceman Championships on the Saluda River.
The Iceman raises money for American Whitewater and boosts awareness about whitewater kayaking. When the races began in 2000, they featured a few local boaters competing for a cash prize followed by a potluck house party.
Over the years, the race has grown to attract boaters from around the region. Event safety now includes downstream backup provided by CFD. Primary safety is provided in Millrace Rapid by Andy and other experienced swiftwater rescue boaters. (Andy assists CFD with their swiftwater training on the Saluda every spring) Partnering with local paddle clubs, Andy also insures the event through the American Canoe Association.
