40 Year Fact

Park Tudor launched its Global Scholars Program in 1997 under the direction of Dr. Jan Guffin, who continues to lead the program today. The two-year program, which serves highly able and motivated Upper School students, offers rising juniors and seniors a valuable understanding of the ethical, aesthetic, linguistic and philosophical nature of the human experience.

Park Tudor students travel to The Hague for Model UN

Twelve Park Tudor seniors are stepping into the shoes of United Nations representatives from the Kingdom of Bahrain at the International Model UN in The Hague, Netherlands.

Students, along with Upper School social studies teacher and Model UN advisor Peter Smith and Upper School English teacher Laura Gellin, left on the trip on Friday, January 21 and will return Monday, January 31.

Park Tudor is one of only nine schools in the U.S. invited to participate in the International Model UN at The Hague. Park Tudor students join approximately 4,000 students representing 191 schools from across the globe this week, debating current issues on the Model UN agenda. Students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries and navigate rules of procedure, all in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolved problems that affect the world.

Model UN students at The Hague this week include Eric McMechan, Zach Hardin, Kelly McLaughlin, Jennifer Risting, Maggie MacPhail, Jonathan Buckley, Nolan Smith, Robbie Pauzek, Ian Fry, Chris Callahan, John Norton and Jack Balaguer.

In addition to the Model UN activities, they also have visited the M.C. Escher museum, and attended a professional "football" (soccer) match.

Park Tudor graduate Rachel Braun '08 met with students several times before they left for their experience at The Hague. Rachel is currently a student at Georgetown University, where she has been the director of training for the university's No.1-ranked Model UN team and has won numerous honors as a participant.
Middle School focuses on character education

For the next two months, middle school students will participate in a special advisory curriculum dedicated to character education.

While family is the primary driver of character education, schools have a role, too, helping today's students become tomorrow's leaders and citizens. The curriculum is designed to help young people develop their own character by addressing the cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects of their development.

Last week, students completed an anonymous School Climate Survey to help provide direction for the Middle School to move forward.

Over the next two months, students will participate in small group activities, hear from outside speakers, and engage in advisory discussions aimed at helping them develop new skills. Among the important areas of development: respect for learning and intellectual accomplishment; acknowledging and respecting the rights of others and self; living with the consequences of our decisions; honoring commitments; confidence in problem-solving abilities; etiquette; active concern for the dignity of ourselves and others; and an active spirit of service.
