A Note From Pastor Kenneth
Our Friday Bible Study just finished an in-depth look at the books of Jonah and Nahum.
Have you ever studied the book of Nahum before? I was talking to a pastor friend about the Nahum study and he responded, “I don’t even know where Nahum is.”
The minor prophets don’t receive a lot of attention for a variety of reasons: they’re difficult to understand, violent, graphic, and talk about people and places that we usually don’t know much about. Plus, they often emphasize a side of God that we don’t spend much time with: his judgement and justice.
There’s a fascinating connection between the book of Jonah and Nahum. In the book of Jonah, the evil city of Nineveh repented and God relented from his promised destruction. One of the greatest revivals in the Bible took place and the grumpy prophet Jonah was angry about it. The book of Nahum is a sequel of sorts to Jonah, in which they fail to repent and are destroyed. Think about that. One generation repented while another generation (100-150 years later) did not - and they were judged by God and destroyed.
There’s a truth that we should wrestle with found in these books and it’s simply this: be faithful to the end. It matters how you begin your faith journey and it matters how you finish it. Look at what the Bible says:
- "... but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." - Matthew 24:13
- "By this gospel, you are saved if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain." -1 Corinthians 15:1-2
-
"For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ." -Hebrews 4:13-14
Thomas A Kempis famously wrote, “In everything you do, think of how your life will end and of how you will stand before God.” So, the big question is this: are you living in such a way that you will finish well?
Running the race with you,
Pastor Kenneth
