STAFF SPOTLIGHT - LUIS VENTURA
1) What does your job entail with South Portland Parks, Recreation & Waterfront?

I'm a Site Leader for the After School Adventures program, my site is Small Elementary school. During the summer I am the    Director of "Little Riots" Summer Camp.

2)     How did you get started in this field?

I've always had a passion for child care and education. I remember playing school with my little cousins and brother, I was the teacher of course! I started volunteering at my little brother's kindergarten and working for their summer camp. Back in Oregon, I was the Artistic Director of a Children's Theater where I created programs for schools that didn't have access to theater, summer theater camps, and directed shows as well. While teaching High School in Oregon, I've spent 4 summers in Maine working as a counselor and later as Assistant Program Director at "Kingsley Pines Camp" in Raymon, ME. I finally decided to move full-time to Maine and that's how I was so lucky to become part of the Recreation Department in SoPo.

3)     What do you like most about your job?

I love being able to create programs and activities for kids to complement the education that they get at school. I take my job as more than providing care for kids, I want to make sure that they have a safe place to express themselves and to learn new skills.

4)     What do you like most about South Portland?

Everything! I recently moved to South Portland from Portland and it was a great decision. I love the community and the easy access to all facilities. It's a perfect location.

5)     What is your favorite park in South Portland?

I love taking my dogs to Hinckley Park! But I also love Bug Light!

6)     Tell us about a new project or program you are working on?

I'm currently working on "The SoPo Scoop" which is a program where I get to work with students in the city to create a Youth Magazine for every kid/student in the community. I'm very excited to guide this group of kids through the process of creating this magazine! The other program I'm leading is the "Reading Challenge" I want to promote reading throughout the community! It sparks creativity and critical thinking.

7)     What do you do for fun?

I love making art! Writing, reading, and watching documentaries.

8)     What is your favorite food?

Mexican and Chinese food!

9)     What is your favorite restaurant?

Bueno Loco (in Falmouth) and Hannah Thai (South Portland)

10)  What’s on your song list right now?

Blackpink (K-Pop) and the 1975's

11)  What is your favorite sports team?

Red Sox

12)  What is your favorite sport or activity to play?

I'm not a super sporty guy but I do like playing (and I'm good) baseball

13)  What is your favorite hobby?

Painting, Drawing, and Writing

14)  How can people get in touch with you if you have a question?

lventura@southportland.org or on my city phone (207- 303-2279)
