STAFF SPOTLIGHT - ROBERT CARTER
1) What does your job entail with South Portland Parks, Recreation & Waterfront? My job as Recreation Manager involves the administration of a wide variety of Recreation Programs, including Summer Rec Camp, Before and Aftercare Programs and Vacation Camps. As a Special Events Manager, I am responsible for planning Winterfest, Holiday Tree Lighting, Summer Concerts at Millcreek Park, Summer Movies at Bug Light Park, and many other community events.

2)     How did you get started in this field? I started in Recreation while I was in High School and College seasonally working for a private residential camp as a Lifeguard, and eventually Program Director. I came to South Portland after college, and wanting to continue my seasonal summer job in a fulltime year round capacity… where I was hired as a fulltime lifeguard for the South Portland Municipal Pool almost 10 years ago. After many years working in Aquatics as a Lifeguard, Supervisor, and Swim Coach, I moved into my current role dealing with Out of School Programs, and Special Events in 2018.

3)     What do you like most about your job? My favorite part of this job is being able to create a strong bond with the South Portland Community, and the constant change of scenery… we never go more than a a few months without needing to change gears to get ready for the next program coming down the road.

4)     What do you like most about South Portland? My favorite thing about South Portland is the Community. While I have never lived in South Portland, I have always felt at home here, and even though it’s a large city… the people in South Portland still make it feel like a small town where everyone knows everyone.

5)     What is your favorite park in South Portland? Bug Light Park by far… its where all the action is, from great views of Portland Harbor, to epic Sunsets over Portland, to being an awesome venue for many events. Bug Light Park is the place to be during the Summer in South Portland.

6)     Tell us about a new project or program you are working on? We are currently working with our local partners (South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club and Sponsors) who put on The Annual South Portland Winterfest… which we were unable to host this year… to put on a fun family oriented family picnic and fireworks show at Wainwright Sports Complex to still celebrate our communities this year, event without the snow.

7)     What do you do for fun? I love spending time with my Wife - Gretchen, Daughter - Addie, and Irish-Doodle – Murphy. I love to ski Sugarloaf during the winter, and spend as much time boating/swimming in Casco Bay as possible during the summer.

8)     What is your favorite food? Street Tacos - El Rayo, Taco Trio, El Jefe… all are awesome.

9)     What is your favorite restaurant? Royal River Grill in Yarmouth currently, but ever changing.

10)  What’s on your song list right now? MLB Radio – YES network… not huge into music, but sports talk radio is always on in my truck.

11)  What is your favorite sports team? New York Yankees

12)  What is your favorite sport or activity to play? Skiing in the winter, Open water swimming during the summer.

13)  What is your favorite hobby? Being out on the Golf Course during the summer, and traveling to fun places during the winter.

14)  How can people get in touch with you if you have a question? Send me an email – [email protected].
