Through the Yizkor prayer we are inspired to make a charitable donation in the memory of our departed loved ones. We remember their love and courage and we try to continue the path they have set for us.

Tzedakah is not only for the living. The Midrash Tanchuma on Parshas Haazinu explains that the mitzvah of tzedakah is so great that it even helps the deceased. This is why we say Yizkor - so we can pledge to give charity and thereby help uplift the souls of the deceased.
